Light management in monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells

open access: yesLight: Science & Applications
All-perovskite tandem solar cells represent a promising strategy for breaking the Shockley-Queisser limits inherent in single-junction solar cells. Reasonable light management and optical design are necessary for all-perovskite tandem solar cells to ...

Unexpectedly efficient ion desorption of graphene-based materials

open access: yesNature Communications, 2022
Desorption of ions from sorbents generally involves high acid or base concentrations and long desorption times, especially for multivalent ions. Here the authors report a rapid and efficient desorption of Co2+, Mn2+, and Sr2+ adsorbed on magnetite ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Mesoscale and microscopic structures record compaction and crystal-melt segregation in silicic mushes

open access: yesScientific Reports
Gravitationally-driven compaction has been proposed as an important mechanism for crystal-melt segregation in silicic mushes. However, there is no microstructural evidence of crystal deformation consistent with compaction in silicic plutonic rocks.

Valorization of Chinese hickory shell as novel sources for the efficient production of xylooligosaccharides

open access: yesBiotechnology for Biofuels, 2021
Chinese hickory shell, a by-product of the food industry, is still not utilized and urgent to develop sustainable technologies for its valorization.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

A matter of utility? Rationalising cycling, cycling rationalities

open access: yes, 2015
This paper discusses how dominant policy paradigms promote a ‘utility’ model of transport, prioritising the destruction of distance and the minimisation of time spent travelling.

Effects of different activation strategies on standing start performance in elite female track cyclists

open access: yesScientific Reports
PAPE (post-activation performance enhancement) has gained attention in sports science due to its potential to enhance athletic performance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different PAPE activation methods, including non-activation (CON ...

An isoform of 14‐3‐3 protein regulates transbilayer lipid movement at the plasma membrane

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of 14‐3‐3ζ in CHO cells confers resistance to exogenous phosphatidylserine (PS) and impairs endocytosis‐independent inward flip‐flop of fluorescent PS at the plasma membrane. RNAi‐mediated knockdown reproduces this defect, while no additive effect is seen in ATP11C‐deficient cells.
