Abstract Trisomy D was found in an infant with the typical cerebral malformations of cyclopia and, in addition, multiple extracerebral congenital defects. The mother of this infant had received medroxyprogesterone by injection for three years prior to conception. It is most probable that the association of these events is coincidental.

One of the founders of the Museum Vrolikianum, Professor Willem Vrolik (1801-1862), was very interested in teratology, especially in a congenital malformation termed cyclopia. In 1834 he published a paper on cyclopia. This work was mainly based on studies of cyclopic specimens present in the collection of his father, Professor Gerardus Vrolik.

Prenatal diagnosis of cyclopia
American Journal of Medical Genetics, 1983AbstractTwo fetuses affected by cyclopia, holoprosencephaly, and malformations of the nasopharynx were diagnosed prenatally in association with acute polyhydramnios. The facial malformations, confirmed by fetography‐amniography and proven at birth, were suspected on the basis of the ultrasonographic examination.

Abstract A case of cyclopia with trisomy D is reported. The mother was treated with chorionic gonadotropin in the first trimester of pregnancy. Microcephaly and omphalocele were diagnosed by ultrasound. Fetal activity was recorded pre- and postglucose administration.
