To determine the personal characteristics, the mode of presentation, the duration of the delay in diagnosis, the number of misdiagnoses, the means to achieve diagnosis, and previous treatment provided for a group of men with interstitial cystitis (IC).A chart review of 29 men diagnosed with IC at our facility from 1988 to 1996 was performed.

Interstitial cystitis — an update
British Journal of Urology, 1996Interstitial cystitis is a rare chronic debilitating condition predominantly affecting middle-aged women. The diagnosis, made from the combination of symptoms, cystoscopic findings and bladder biopsies, is often delayed because GPs are often unaware of the condition. The precise aetiology remains obscure and it is clear that there is much research that

Despite much research on FUS, there still is no consensus regarding its cause, or even its definition. We recently have demonstrated that some cases of FUS are similar to interstitial cystitis in human beings. Exclusion of anatomic defects, behavior abnormalities, neoplasia, urolithiasis, urethral obstruction, and urinary tract infection leads one to ...

PATHOLOGY OF INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS
Urologic Clinics of North America, 1994Morphologic changes, including light microscopy and ultrastructural, immunologic, and immunohistochemical findings in interstitial cystitis are described. The results indicate that biopsies are useful as an aid in the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis.

Diagnosis of Interstitial Cystitis
Journal of Urology, 1990We reviewed clinical and histological findings in 55 patients with interstitial cystitis and 21 with voiding dysfunction secondary to other pathological conditions. Of our interstitial cystitis patients 36% would fail to meet the research definition proposed at a recent National Institutes of Health workshop. Detrusor mastocytosis was present in 64% of

The Histology of Interstitial Cystitis
The American Journal of Surgical Pathology, 1990Several studies have reported histologic findings in interstitial cystitis (IC) bladder biopsy specimens. However, these studies used a variety of criteria to define IC, which may explain the variation noted in the histologic changes. Clinical experience shows that these biopsy specimens are often not helpful in confirming the diagnosis.
