Cytokinins: activity, biosynthesis, and translocation.
Annual Review of Plant Biology, 2006Cytokinins (CKs) play a crucial role in various phases of plant growth and development, but the basic molecular mechanisms of their biosynthesis and signal transduction only recently became clear.

The glucosylation of cytokinins
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1973Summary When [3H]zeatin was supplied to the roots of Zea mays seedlings, the principal metabolite formed was identified as 9-glucosylzeatin. Other metabolites produced were adenosine 5′-phosphate, zeatin riboside 5′-phosphate, adenine, adenosine, and zeatin riboside.

Cytokinins influence many aspects of plant growth and development. The current model for cytokinin signaling is a multi-step phosphorelay similar to the prokaryotic two-component systems that are used in responses to environmental stimuli. Recently, progress has been made in improving our understanding of the molecular mechanism that underlies ...

Cytokinin oxidase is key enzyme of cytokinin degradation
Biochemistry (Moscow), 2012Cytokinin oxidase (EC 1.5.99.12) is an enzyme that catalyzes the irreversible degradation of cytokinin phytohormones that are extremely necessary for growth, development, and differentiation of plants. Cytokinin oxidase plays an important role in the regulation of quantitative level of cytokinins and their distribution in plant tissues.

Despite long-standing observations on diverse cytokinin actions, the discovery path to cytokinin signaling mechanisms was tortuous. Unyielding to conventional genetic screens, experimental innovations were paramount in unraveling the core cytokinin signaling circuitry, which employs a large repertoire of genes with overlapping and specific functions ...

Post-embryonic plant growth and development are sustained by meristems, a source of undifferentiated cells that give rise to the adult plant structures. Two hormones, cytokinin and auxin, are known to act antagonistically in controlling meristem activities.

Cytokinins are adenine derivatives with an isoprenoid side chain and play an essential role in plant development. Plant isopentenyltransferases that catalyze the first and rate-limiting steps of cytokinin biosynthesis have recently been identified.

Cytokinin Oxidase and the Degradative Metabolism of Cytokinins
1990Over the last 16 years considerable knowledge has accumulated about the metabolism of naturally occurring and synthetic cytokinins. In the case of naturally occurring cytokinins, many of the metabolites identified after the external application of a cytokinin to a variety of plant tissues have been subsequently identified as endogenous compounds. Thus,
