Fine-needle aspiration of the spleen is a useful method for evaluation of reactive, inflammatory, and neoplastic disorders, particularly those that involve the hematopoietic system. Interpretation of splenic aspirates is enhanced by concurrent evaluation of blood and other hemic tissues.

Cytology of bone is a useful diagnostic tool. Aspiration of lytic or proliferative lesions can assist with the diagnosis of inflammatory or neoplastic processes. Bacterial, fungal, and protozoal organisms can result in significant osteomyelitis, and these organisms can be identified on cytology.

Cytology of Melanoblastoma [PDF]
Cytological diagnosis was made in 26 cases of cutaneous melanoblastoma, on smears obtained by cautious scraping of the tumor surface. The cytological pattern of melanoblastoma is characteristic: in the smear are present large atypical cells with round hyperchromic nucleus, giant binucleated cells, cells with pseudopodes and granules of melanin ...

THE MORE RIGID definition of endometriosis demand the histologic demonstration of typical endometrial glandular and stromal tissue for substantiation of the diagnosis. The definition is strict in order to exclude the many forms of peritoneal inclusion found in the pelvis.

THE article by Lang et al.1suggests that the ruby crystal laser, without mode control, is incapable of producing small areas of tissue destruction, and also that the triocular microscope is not usable. In this laboratory we have been using a ruby crystal laser and a triocular microscope as a routine instrument in biological investigation.

The inclusion bodies of Halberstaedter and Prowazek are the most characteristic cytologic finding in trachoma and their pres ence in a given case limits the diagnosis to trachoma or inclusion conjunctivitis. The in clusion bodies are regularly demonstrable, however, only in the early stages of the dis ease and during acute exacerbations.

Different cytologic methods are frequently employed for diagnosis in lung lesions, as demand for less invasive procedures has increased. Fungal and viral organisms can be readily appreciated in both exfoliative and aspirated cytologic specimens. Cytopathologists play a vital role in the diagnosis of lung cancer as most of these neoplasms are diagnosed ...

Impression cytology refers to the application of cellulose acetate filter material to the ocular surface to remove the superficial layers of the conjunctival epithelium. Impression cytology has been found to be useful in assessing the ocular surface in various dry eye disorders, such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), cicatricial ocular pemphigoid ...
