Deutlich vor DVB, zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre wurde DAB – Digital Audio Broadcasting entwickelt und standardisiert. Trotzdem war DAB in vielen Landern lange relativ unbekannt. DAB-Netze wurden in Deutschland regional unterschiedlich bereits ab den 1990er Jahren in Betrieb genommen; ab 2011 wurden die Netze weiter ausgebaut und auf DAB+ umgestellt.
