forceX and forceR: A mobile setup and r package to measure and analyse a wide range of animal closing forces

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 9, Page 1938-1948, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Animal closing forces such as bite and pinch forces may determine access to food and mates and are therefore important performance metrics related to fitness. Previous measurement setups to obtain in vivo closing force data were often custom‐made for each study, hampering comparisons among different studies.

Riparian buffers provide refugia during secondary forest succession

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 28, Issue 9, Page 2008-2019, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Aim Secondary forests regenerating from human disturbance are increasingly becoming a predominant forest type in many regions, and they play a significant role in forest community dynamics. Understanding the factors that underlie the variation in species responses during secondary succession is important for understanding community assembly ...

Hemipenial morphology and diversity in South American anoles (Squamata: Dactyloidae) [PDF]

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Zoology, 2016
Hemipenial morphology has provided useful characters to improve species identification and phylogenetic relationships in squamates. Here we provide hemipenial description and illustration of 13 South American anoles. At generic and specific levels, differences are mainly related to shape and ornamentation; intraspecific variation is low.

A most unusual tail: Scoliosis in a wild Australian skink, and reported incidences and suggested causes of similar malformations amongst squamates

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 47, Issue 3, Page 723-728, May 2022., 2022
AbstractMalformations of vertebrae potentially occur across many taxa, particularly in Testudines, which are susceptible to kyphosis (dorsoventral curvature of the spine). Such malformations may stem from either genetic or environmental origins, and their prevalence and associated impacts on survival remain poorly understood.

Dewlap colour variation in Anolis sagrei is maintained among habitats within islands of the West Indies

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 35, Issue 5, Page 680-692, May 2022., 2022
Animal signals evolve in an ecological context. Here, we show how coloration (as measured by reflectance profiles) of the dewlap in the neotropical lizard Anolis sagrei varies among habitats and islands throughout the Bahamas and Cayman Islands. Abstract Animal signals evolve in an ecological context.

AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIORS AND THEIR EFFECT ON RESOURCE USE BY MALE LITTLE BROWN SKINKS, SCINCELLA LATERALIS [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The aggressive behaviors of adult male Little Brown Skinks, Scincella lateralis, and their effects on access to an important resource (a single retreat) were the subject of a study consisting of 10 laboratory trials in which the behavioral interactions ...

Are evolutionary transitions in sexual size dimorphism related to sex determination in reptiles?

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 34, Issue 4, Page 594-603, April 2021., 2021
The phylogenetic distribution of sex determination systems (outer ring) and sexual size dimorphism (inner ring) in reptiles. Abstract Sex determination systems are highly variable in vertebrates, although neither the causes nor the implications of this diversity are fully understood.

Anatomy, morphology and evolution of the patella in squamate lizards and tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The patella (kneecap) is the largest and best-known of the sesamoid bones, postulated to confer biomechanical advantages including increasing joint leverage and reinforcing the tendon against compression.
