Some serum constituents of fallow deer (Dama dama)

The concentrations of calcium, inorganic phosphorus, proteins and total bilirubin and the activities of some enzymes in the sera of 54 fallow deer are presented. Electrophoresis of the serum proteins indicate that fallow deer have a single alpha-globulin whereas red deer have two.

Four male deer ranging from 2-4 ages at Ankara Sincan Zoo were used in this study Testis diameter, width and height dimensions were measured. Ejaculate volume, semen pH, spermatozoa concentration were determined at laboratory.

As a result of three-year observations of Cervus (Dama) dama L. in enclosures of the zoo it was established that main biological rhythms (shedding of horns, autumn anci spring moult, rut and calving) proceed in them for shorter periods of time than in other species of Cervus elaphus L. and depend on age, fatness and physiological state.

Although Turkey is now the only country to which it is indigenous, fallow deer have been introduced into large parts of Europe. Fallow deer that either escaped or were released have formed populations across the Nteherlands. Their core distribution areas are the coastal dunes and the Veluwe.
