Lateral load behavior of RC buildings exposed to fire: case study

open access: yesJournal of Asian Architecture and Building Engineering, 2023
Fire damaged reinforced concrete buildings are often made usable by performing non-structural and cosmetic repairs. These types of repairs do not guarantee the safety of such buildings under the effect of future lateral loads, such as earthquakes.

Lessons from the evacuation of the World Trade Center, Sept 11th 2001 for the future development of computer simulations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
This paper provides an overview of the state of the art in evacuation simulations. These interactive computer based tools have been developed to help the owners and designers of large public buildings to assess the risks that occupants might face during ...

Cell‐cycle‐specific lesion evolution rather than inhibition of double‐strand‐break repair underpins cisplatin radiosensitization

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We analyze cisplatin–DNA adducts (CDAs) and double‐strand breaks (DSBs) in a cell‐cycle‐dependent manner. We find that CDAs form similarly across all cell cycle phases. DSBs arise only in S‐phase. CDAs might not directly impair DSB repair, but S‐phase DSB lesions evolve in the presence of CDAs and disrupt repair in G2, also causing radiosensitization ...

Loss of IGF‐1R impairs DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin leading to defective end‐joining

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
IGF‐1R promotes radioresistance by facilitating DNA‐PKcs recruitment to chromatin, enabling non‐homologous end‐joining (NHEJ) repair of double‐strand breaks. Inhibition or loss of IGF‐1R disrupts this recruitment to damage sites, driving compensatory reliance on microhomology‐mediated end‐joining (MMEJ) repair.

Groundtruthing OpenStreetMap Building Damage Assessment

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2014
AbstractTo gauge the accuracy of the crowd-sourced damage assessments in the Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan, REACH and the American Red Cross conducted a study comparing enumerated field damage assessments with the remote damage assessments conducted by the OpenStreetMap community.

Comparing observed damages and losses with modelled ones using a probabilistic approach: the Lorca 2011 case [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A loss and damage assessment was performed for the buildings of Lorca, Spain, considering an earthquake hazard scenario with similar characteristics to those of a real event which occurred on May 11th, 2011, in terms of epicentre, depth and magnitude ...

Behaviour of composite floor slabs under fire conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This paper is concerned with the ultimate behaviour of composite floor slabs during fire scenarios. Steel/concrete composite structures are increasingly common in the UK and worldwide, particularly for multi-storey construction.

Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...
