Effect of fibre treatment and moisture content on the vibration and acoustic properties of the basalt/hemp hybrid composites

open access: yesMaterials Research Express
The hybridization reinforcements of composites allow design engineers to enhance the structural and acoustic properties of synthetic fibre-reinforced materials.

2D Magnetic and Topological Quantum Materials and Devices for Ultralow Power Spintronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
2D magnets and topological quantum materials enable ultralow‐power spintronics by combining robust magnetic order with symmetry‐protected, Berry‐curvature‐driven transport. Fundamentals of 2D anisotropy and spin‐orbit‐coupling induced band inversion are linked to scalable growth and vdW stacking.

Multi-Error-Correcting Amplitude Damping Codes

open access: yes, 2010
We construct new families of multi-error-correcting quantum codes for the amplitude damping channel. Our key observation is that, with proper encoding, two uses of the amplitude damping channel simulate a quantum erasure channel.

Prenucleation Species Dictate Foreign Ion Incorporation in the Biomineral Precursor Amorphous Calcium Carbonate

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ACC forms via aggregating prenucleation clusters that gatekeep its chemical composition. Ion identity steers the path: Ba and Sr substitute Ca in clusters, thereby inhibiting nucleation, with a dose‐dependent switch of Sr to induction. Mg partitions into Mg‐rich and Mg‐poor clusters; the latter form ACC, expelling Mg.

Soil Masing Behaviour for Offshore Wind Turbines—Fatigue Design and a Simple Damping Model

open access: yesWind Energy
Fatigue damage accumulation for offshore wind turbines is highly dependent on damping of the structure and particularly on the soil damping contribution during idling conditions.

Determination of spin Hall effect and spin diffusion length of Pt from self-consistent fitting of damping enhancement and inverse spin-orbit torque measurements

open access: yes, 2018
Understanding the evolution of spin-orbit torque (SOT) with increasing heavy-metal thickness in ferromagnet/normal metal (FM/NM) bilayers is critical for the development of magnetic memory based on SOT.

Structural damage identification using damping: a compendium of uses and features

open access: yes, 2017
The vibration responses of structures under controlled or ambient excitation can be used to detect structural damage by correlating changes in structural dynamic properties extracted from responses with damage.

Modelling damping sources in monopile-supported offshore wind turbines

open access: yesWind Energy, 2018
Vibration damping in offshore wind turbines is a key parameter to predict reliably the dynamic response and fatigue life of these systems. Damping in an offshore wind turbine originates from different sources, mainly, aerodynamic, structural ...

The Cuttlebone Blueprint for Multifunctional Metamaterials: Design Taxonomy, Functional Decoupling, and Future Horizons

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cuttlebone‐inspired metamaterials exploit a septum‐wall architecture to achieve excellent mechanical and functional properties. This review classifies existing designs into direct biomimetic, honeycomb‐type, and strut‐type architectures, summarizes governing design principles, and presents a decoupled design framework for interpreting multiphysical ...
