Proportional viscous damping model for matching damping ratios

Engineering Structures, 2020
Abstract A proportional viscous damping model is proposed to address the limitations of existing models that are either inaccurate or computationally costly in matching damping ratios. The proposed model allows easy curve-fitting to a given damping ratio distribution with negligible error and is remarkably accurate for matching a constant damping ...

Damping Ratio for Dry Sands

Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1977
Using the Torsional Simple Shear Device, the writers investigated the relationship between damping ratio λ\N and shear strain γ\N for Ottawa, Del Monte, Golden Gardens, and Seward Park sands. Experimental results show that the type of sand, as expressed in soil gradation and angularity, influences soil damping. However, this influence can be taken into

Insights into damping ratios in buildings

Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 2020
AbstractThis paper analyzes how soil–structure interaction affects the overall damping ratio of multistory buildings and compares theoretical results with empirical data inferred from seismic responses of buildings in California. A method is presented for obtaining effective periods and damping ratios of a replacement fixed‐base multiple‐degree‐of ...

Optimal damping ratio of TLCDs

Structural Engineering and Mechanics, 2000
The study of the optimal damping ratio of a tuned liquid-column damper (or TLCD) attached to a single-degree-of-freedom system is presented. The tuned liquid-column damper is composed of two vertical columns connected by a horizontal section in the bottom and partially filled with water.

Damping mechanisms and damping ratios in vibrating unreinforced stone masonry

Engineering Structures, 2010
Abstract In seeking to understand the dynamic behaviour of historic stone structures, eight representative walls were constructed and tested under in-plane free vibration conditions. Each wall consisted of two wythes, one sandstone, one limestone, joined by a rubble core of small stones and mortar.

First Mode Damping Ratios for Buildings

Earthquake Spectra, 2015
Expressions for the expected value of the first mode damping ratio are derived by using 122 seismic responses from concrete buildings and 81 from steel. The results include dissipation at the soil-structure interface and are appropriate for situations in which this source of dissipation is not included in the model.

Evaluation of Absolute Damping from Modal Damping Ratios

2004
In the previous chapters, we determined the natural frequencies and modal shapes for undamped structures when modeled as shear buildings. We also determined the response of these structures using the modal superposition method. In this method, as we have seen, the differential equations of motion are uncoupled by means of a transformation of ...

Study of Damped Critical Speeds and Damping Ratios of Flexible Rotors

Journal of Vibration and Acoustics, 1984
Influences of bearing damping on critical speeds of flexible rotors are investigated. First, the damped critical speed and the damping ratio of a uniform shaft supported at both ends are examined. It is shown that there exists an optimum bearing damping that gives the maximum damping ratio for each order of critical speed, and that with increasing ...

Stroke Work Damping Ratio is Increased in Trained Athletes

2021 43rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society (EMBC), 2021
Athletes training is often associated with morphological changes in the heart. In this sense, the ventricular pressure-volume (PV) relation provides a complete characterization of cardiac pump performance. Regarding the arterial system (AS), arterial wall viscosity is a source of energy dissipation, that takes place during mechanical transduction. Left

Uniform Damping Ratio For Non-Classically Damped Hybrid Steel Concrete Structures

International Journal of Civil Engineering, 2016
Steel–concrete hybrid systems are used in buildings, in which a steel structure has been placed on a concrete structure to make a lighter structure and have a faster construction. Dynamic analysis of hybrid structures is usually a complex procedure due to various dynamic characteristics of each part, i.e., stiffness, mass and especially damping ...
