The present study was designed to assess and compare participation motives among 308 non‐professional folk dancers, competitive ballroom dancers, ballet dancers and modem dancers. As in many studies of motives for sport participation, the dancers surveyed here cited several reasons for being attracted by dance.

Screening Program for Dancers Administered by Dancers

Students enrolled in a dance kinesiology class were trained to administer a screening protocol on younger dancers in the same department. The dance kinesiology students gained experience assessing alignment and functional symmetry in their peers, and then recommended exercises for gaining awareness and developing balanced patterns of movement.

Although dancers put a great deal of stress through the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ), it is unlikely that dancing causes bunions; however, such forces may produce an environment in which bunions may develop. It is best to employ conservative measures rather than surgical intervention in dancers who have a painful bunion.
