We found rich and compositionally different assemblages of medium and large‐sized mammals in protected areas on the southern edge of Amazon. However, both have high rates of mammal defaunation. We argue that anthropogenic threats in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation are eroding large ungulate populations, especially peccaries.

Seasonality in Reproduction and Reproductive Physiology of Caviomorphs
ABSTRACT Animals experience seasonal fluctuations of photoperiod, food availability, temperature and precipitation. This affects their energy budget, often leading to seasonal reproduction. We review available literature and (re)‐analyse existing datasets on seasonal reproduction of South American caviomorph rodents that are characterised by long ...

Thinking with Amazonian Indigenous Peoples to expand ideas on domestication
Abstract Indigenous knowledges are being increasingly recognized as fundamental for environmental governance, ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation. However, they tend to be recognized by Western science only when they converge with Western scientific knowledge, while ontological differences are generally treated as irrelevant or ...

Medium and large mammal responses to fire in a neotropical savanna system in Guyana
Mammal responses to fire—both natural and man‐made—in an Indigenous savanna landscape in Guyana were researched with transects for animal signs and live sightings. Species richness showed a non‐linear relationship with time since fire, likely due to differing responses from individual species, which may be explained by habitat preference and post‐fire ...

The Agoutis: A Future Model for Ecologically Relevant Neuroscience and Physiology In Natura
Recent advances in behavioral monitoring and wireless physiology make neuroscience in the wild a viable option for larger animal models. Here we spotlight one such species, the agouti (Dasyprocta spp.) a large promising rodent model for the future of neuroscience in natura.
