The concept of information has been widely deployed within biology. In this chapter I argue that this has largely been done in a colloquial manner, leading to a lack of clarity. In this chapter I argue for a definition of information as the functional relationship between input and system and against the idea that information is something to be ...

The Information Funnel: Exploiting Named Data for Information-Maximizing Data Collection
2014 IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems, 2014This paper describes the exploitation of hierarchical data names to achieve information-utility maximizing data collection in social sensing applications. We describe a novel transport abstraction, called the information funnel. It encapsulates a data collection protocol for social sensing that maximizes a measure of delivered information utility, that

Data processing and information handling
Papers and discussions presented at the December 3-5, 1958, eastern joint computer conference: Modern computers: objectives, designs, applications on XX - AIEE-ACM-IRE '58 (Eastern), 1958It is generally recognized that, at the present stage of development, businesses must process data to produce reports useful for management guidance in making decisions. Such reports are, however, often more dependent upon what data are available and the mechanics of processing than upon managerial needs for facts and abilities to use them.

Data, information, knowledge: An information science analysis
Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, 2014I analyze the text of an article that appeared in this journal in 2007 that published the results of a questionnaire in which a number of experts were asked to define the concepts of data, information, and knowledge. I apply standard information retrieval techniques to build a list of the most frequent terms in each set of definitions.

Data-Informed, Not Data-Driven
As artificial intelligence tools increasingly shape instructional delivery, student monitoring, and administrative operations in K–12 education, school leaders must navigate the fine line between leveraging data for insight and over-relying on algorithmic outputs.openaire +1 more source
