DES (Data Encryption Standard) is a symmetric encryption algorithm adopted as a federal standard in the late 1970’s and the beginning of 1980’s (FIPS PUB 46 in 1976, FIPS PUB 81 in 1977, and FIPS PUB 81 in 1980). In 1981, ANSI approved DES as an ANSI standard (ANSI X3.92).
