Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

Experimental validation of equilibria in fuel cells with dead-ended anodes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
This paper investigates the nitrogen blanketing front during the dead-ended anode (DEA) operation of a PEM fuel cell. Surprisingly the dynamic evolution of nitrogen and water accumulation in the dead-ended anode (DEA) of a PEM fuel cell arrives to a ...

Root endophytic Phialocephala fortinii and Talaromyces verruculosus enhance growth and affect heavy metal tolerance of Miscanthus sinensis Andersson growing naturally at a mine site

open access: yesJournal of Plant Interactions
Miscanthus sinensis Andersson naturally grows at mining sites and accumulates heavy metals, suggesting heavy metal tolerance. This study aimed to elucidate the heavy metal tolerance mechanisms of M.

Density Measurement of Irradiated and Nonirradiated Zirconium Oxide by Ptychographic X‐Ray Computed Tomography (PXCT)

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mass density governs the protective behavior of oxide layers on nuclear fuel cladding. Ptychographic X‐ray computed tomography measures zirconium oxide grown on Zircaloy‐4 under reactor and autoclave conditions, revealing nearly identical bulk densities of 5.1 ± 0.80 g cm−3.

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Rock Is Dead, But Metal Will Live Forever

open access: yes
Abstract Metal has throughout its history been understood in the context of what Allan F. Moore calls the “hard rock–heavy metal continuum,” an imagined linear spectrum which ranges from mainstream rock to underground metal. This continuum is often imagined to trace out a temporal progression from old to new, with metal evolving away ...
