High-Throughput White Blood Cell (Leukocyte) Enrichment from Whole Blood Using Hydrodynamic and Inertial Forces

open access: yesMicromachines, 2020
A microfluidic chip, which can separate and enrich leukocytes from whole blood, is proposed. The chip has 10 switchback curve channels, which are connected by straight channels.

Laminar-turbulent transition in Taylor-Dean flow

open access: yesJournal of Physics: Conference Series, 2005
An experimental study is reported of flows produced in a moderate Taylor-Couette system, Γ ≈ 15, closed or azimuthally opened. In the last case, the flow is bounded by θ = 0 and (2π − θ1) where θ1 = 30° represents the region cut-off by a diaphragm.

Numerical Investigation of an Unsteady and Anisotropic Turbulent ‎Flow Downstream a 90° Bend Pipe with and without Ribs [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied and Computational Mechanics, 2021
In this work, a numerical study of the dynamical behavior of unsteady and anisotropic turbulent flow downstream a 90° bended pipe was presented. For this purpose, comparative computations are carried out employing two flow configurations, bend pipe with ...

Experimental Study of Heat Transfer Coefficients of Shell and Helically Coiled Tube Heat Exchangers [PDF]

open access: yesEngineering and Technology Journal, 2013
This work presents an experimental study of the heat transfer coefficients of shell and helically coiled tube heat exchangers. Three heat exchangers with different coil pitches were tested for both parallel-flow and counter-flow arrangement.

A numerical study of flow characteristics in a helical pipe

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2016
Flow characteristics and loss mechanism inside the helical pipe with large-caliber and large-scale Dean number were analyzed in this study. Numerical simulation was carried out for exploring velocity distribution, pressure field, and secondary flow by ...

The Separation of Microalgae Using Dean Flow in a Spiral Microfluidic Device

open access: yesInventions, 2018
A cell-in-droplet encapsulation using Dean flow in a spiral microfluidic device was applied to separate microalgae. In recent years, researchers have been interested in separating micro particles using microfluidic chips because of its great advantages ...

Effects of inlet junctions on horizontally stratified flows

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2023
Horizontally stratified flows can be seen in a wide variety of micro-scale engineering problems. Recent studies have shown that diffusion at the interface between two liquids leads to a lateral flow, causing the fluid to rotate around the central axis of

The influence of secondary flow structures in a turbocharger turbine housing in steady state and pulsating flow conditions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
This paper presents a computational investigation into the effect of volute secondary flow structures on turbine inlet flow conditions. The steady state results show Dean type vortices exist early in the volute.

Dean number only can not determine characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer in helically coiled tubes with large curvature

open access: yesCase Studies in Thermal Engineering
The majority of reported findings indicate that the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics within helically coiled tubes (HCTs) with small curvature can be determined solely by Dean number.
