Theoretical models predict that deception should occur even in stable signalling systems. Assessment of the prevalence of deception and its importance has, however, been hampered by the lack of a rigorous definition of what constitutes deception and by the anecdotal nature of much of the literature.

Abstract This chapter describes the formal structure of deception, rather than explaining why it is morally wrong. In particular, it describes the difference between four analytically distinct kinds of deception referred to, respectively, as ‘lying’, ‘merely misleading’, ‘falsely exculpating’, and ‘falsely inculpating’.

A geneal Deception Game \(\Gamma (n,k,P_ 1,...,P_ n)\) is a two-person zero-sum game of the following form: Each component \(x_ i\) of an ordered n-tuple \((x_ 1,...,x_ n)\) of real numbers is chosen independently from the closed interval [0,1] by means of a probability function \(P_ i\) on [0,1]. Only player 2 sees the n-tuple and, after seeing it, he

Assessing Deception Differences with Mimicry Deception Theory
Journal of Personality Assessment, 2021Mimicry Deception Theory (MDT) argues that deception varies along a long- to short-term continuum. Long-term deception involves complex deception, community integration, slow resource extraction, and low detectability, whereas short-term deception is the opposite.

Philosophical work on self-deception revolves around a trio of questions. What is self-deception? Is self-deception possible? How are instances of self-deception to be explained? The extent to which self-deception is analogous to interpersonal deception is controversial, partly because certain analogies threaten to render the possibility of self ...

Deception may be of two sorts, the attempted deceiving of another person, or the attempted deceiving of oneself. Both seem to be possible of achievement and each is distinguished by its own circumstances and its own difficulties. The present communication concerns itself in the main with deception of self.

How Deceptive are Deceptive Visualizations?
Proceedings of the 33rd Annual ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2015In this paper, we present an empirical analysis of deceptive visualizations. We start with an in-depth analysis of what deception means in the context of data visualization, and categorize deceptive visualizations based on the type of deception they lead to.
