Drought and soil macrofauna functional diversity effects on Mediterranean tree growth in an Ecotron ecosystem experiment

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract The intensity, frequency and severity of drought events are projected to increase in the Mediterranean region under ongoing climate change. This may impact plant growth and survival in Mediterranean forests leading to altered ecosystem dynamics. The functional diversity

Improved use of deep soil water promotes radial growth during drought

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, EarlyView.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Increasingly frequent seasonal droughts under rapid climate change threaten the growth stability of subtropical mixed forests across the mid‐subtropical monsoon region.

Apex predators exploit advantageous snow conditions across hunting modes

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Advantageous snow conditions—in terms of snow depth and density—are among the most important features of the winter landscape for two apex predators, regardless of hunting strategy. In a warming climate, the knock‐on effects of a diminishing snowpack may reduce the hunting success of multiple large carnivore species.

Belowground effects of ground‐dwelling large herbivores in forest ecosystems

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
This study reviews how ground‐dwelling large herbivores affect forest soil and litter globally. Effects are context‐dependent, vary among species and forest types, and remain poorly studied in tropical forests, highlighting critical gaps in understanding nutrient cycling and ecosystem functioning.

A reappraisal of the Middle to Later Stone Age prehistory of Morocco Réévaluer la préhistoire du Maroc, du Middle Stone Age au Later Stone Age

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
Over the last 25 years, perceptions of the early prehistory of Northwest Africa have undergone radical changes due to new fieldwork projects and a corresponding growth in scientific interest in the region. Much of this work has been focused in Morocco, known for its extremely rich fossil and archaeological records in caves and rock shelters.

The role of the Eastern Mediterranean in human evolution: recent results from Greece Le rôle du Bassin méditerranéen oriental dans l’évolution humaine : résultats récents en Grèce

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, EarlyView.
The Eastern Mediterranean lies directly on the principal migration route for human groups dispersing across Africa, Europe, and Asia. It also encompasses the Balkans, where fauna and flora, as well as hominin populations, are thought to have persisted through glacial periods.
