Loess Studies in Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics, Volume 69, Issue 2, June 2026.
Loess in Aotearoa New Zealand (ANZ) has been studied since its first documented recognition (on Banks Peninsula) in 1878 by Julius von Haast. A decade later, John Hardcastle revealed that southern ANZ loess was both glacial in origin and contained signals of past climates.

Phenomenology and Interpretations of Sleep Paralysis with an Aotearoa New Zealand Sample: Cultural Nuances and Clinical Implications

open access: yesKōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online, Volume 21, Issue 2, June 2026.
Isolated sleep paralysis (ISP) is a temporary state of immobility that occurs during the transition between wakefulness and sleep. Although described as hallucinations within biomedical discourse, frightening multisensory perceptions can often accompany muscle atonia, giving rise to numerous cultural, spiritual, and supernatural explanatory models ...

Impact of Dataset Size and Hyperparameters Tuning in a Variational Autoencoder for Structure–Property Mapping in Porous Metamaterials

open access: yesProceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 26, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT This study extends a deep learning framework for the inverse reconstruction of open‐cell porous metamaterials targeting specific hydraulic properties such as porosity and intrinsic permeability. Building on our recent work that employed a property‐variational autoencoder (pVAE) for structure–property mapping, the current contribution examines ...

Denoising Diffusion Model With Pixel‐Adaptive Convolutions for Sheet Metal Forming Analysis

open access: yesProceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 26, Issue 2, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Traditional tool development processes in mechanical forming, especially for pressing tools, are often limited by time‐consuming trial‐and‐error cycles, which rely heavily on expert knowledge. These cycles can create bottlenecks and increase costs.

An Interpretable TCN– Transformer Framework for Lithium‐Ion Battery State of Health Estimation Using SHAP Analysis

open access: yesQuality and Reliability Engineering International, Volume 42, Issue 4, Page 1426-1442, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Accurate state of health (SOH) estimation of Li‐ion batteries is essential for ensuring safety, reliability, and prolonging battery lifespan in energy storage systems and electric vehicles. This study proposes a hybrid temporal convolutional network (TCN)–transformer framework that effectively captures both short‐term temporal dynamics and ...
