Natural variability of geochemical conditions, biogeochemical processes and element fluxes in sediments of the CCZ [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
During RV SONNE cruise SO239 in March/April 2015 five sites in the area of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ) in the eastern equatorial Pacific were visited as part of the JPI Oceans pilot action Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining“.

Halorotetin B, A Novel Terpenoid Compound Derived from Marine Ascidian, Suppresses Tumor Growth by Targeting the Cell Cycle Regulator UBE2C

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Halorotetin B, a novel small‐molecule terpenoid identified from an edible marine ascidian, exhibits strong anti‐tumor activity both in vitro and in vivo through direct targeting UBE2C to induce tumor cell cycle arrest and then lead tumor cell senescence. As a newly discovered UBE2C inhibitor, Halorotetin B can serve as a novel potential cell senescence

Vortex-Induced Vibration of Deep-Sea Mining Pipes: Analysis Using the Slicing Method

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Deep-sea mining pipes are different from traditional ocean risers articulated at both ends: they are free-suspended, weakly constrained at the bottom, and have an intermediate silo at the end, compared to which relatively little research has been carried

Deep-water organic-mineral sediments of the black sea as the object of mining and dewatering [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The results of laboratory investigations of grain-size, physical, mechanical and rheological properties of the deep-sea organic-mineral sediments sampled from the depth of 1,920 – 2,150 m at the polygon “Sapropels” in the Black Sea are given. The results

The Microbiota Shapes Central Nervous System Myelination in Early Life

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Gut microbiota shapes brain development by regulating myelination and glial cell maturation in early life. Using germ‐free (GF) mice and zebrafish, this study reveals sex‐ and age‐dependent effects on myelin growth, integrity, and related gene expression.

Numerical simulations and large-scale experimental research into air-lifting system for deep-sea mining

open access: yesInternational Journal of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering
The deep seabed harbors abundant mineral resources. To achieve the economic viability of deep-sea mining, the efficiency of polymetallic nodule lifting is critical.

Impact of mining activities in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin on surface water and possibilities of its reduction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Due to the deposits of quality hard coal, the area of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) has been one of the most industrialised regions in Europe for centuries.

Connexin43 Deficiency Leads to Ventricular Arrhythmias by Reprogramming Proline Metabolism

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study demonstrated that connexin43 (Cx43) knockout caused arrhythmic phenotype and decreased proline content in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, Cx43 interacts with the amino acid transporter SNAT2 (sodium‐dependent neutral amino acid transporter), and its deficiency disrupts proline transport and metabolism.
