Diagnosis of Deep Vein Thrombosis
Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis, 2006Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) requires a prompt and accurate diagnosis to avoid the potentially fatal consequences of a delay in adequate treatment. The diagnostic strategy of suspected venous thromboembolism is an example of the application of Bayes' theorem. As a result, the available diagnostic tools, both noninvasive (such as ultrasonography, D-dimer,

Deep Representation for Finger-Vein Image-Quality Assessment
IEEE transactions on circuits and systems for video technology (Print), 2018Finger-vein biometrics has been extensively investigated for personal authentication. One of the open issues in finger-vein verification is the lack of robustness against image-quality degradation. Spurious and missing features in poor-quality images may

This 65-year-old woman presented with complaints of pain and swelling in her left calf for 3 days. On examination the leg felt warm and there was tenderness in the calf, which measured 5 cm more in diameter than the right. Also, forced dorsiflexion of the left foot, with the knee flexed, reproduced pain in the calf (Homan's sign).

Treatment of the superficial leg veins invariably requires examination of the deep leg veins. This is because any pathology identified in the deep veins may influence the treatment strategy. Since this book focuses on superficial veins, only an elementary description of the subject is presented.
