Conservation of Defensive Military Structures Built with Rammed Earth [PDF]
Earth is a complex material with mechanical and physical behaviors that differ from modern building materials. The conservation of rammed-earth (RE) constructions presents specific difficulties that are challenging to overcome.

Permanent Defensive Structures of Khingan Tunnel: Design and Construction [PDF]
This study explores the history of the fortification defense system of the Khingan Tunnel on the Chinese Eastern Railway during the years 1914–1918. The relevance of this research is underscored by the lack of specialized works addressing the history of ...

Defensive Reactions to Threatening Health Messages: Alternative Structures and Next Questions
Defensive reactions offer an explanation for why people reject persuasive messages. Surprisingly, little research has focused on the basic question of how they are structured with regard to one another.

Structural Aspects of Defense [PDF]
Plants can defend themselves very efficiently against phytopathogens. This resistance can be based on preformed resistance factors or it may be the result of infection-induced resistance reactions. Preformed and induced resistance mechanisms can be structural or chemical in nature.

Structured instruments for insanity defense evaluations: Opportunities and limitations
AbstractInsanity evaluations are often criticized for their—alleged—lack of objectivity, reliability and transparency. Structured tools to guide and support forensic evaluators during these evaluations have been developed—but they are rarely employed in forensic practice.

THE ECOLOGY OF ASYMMETRY IN STICKLEBACK DEFENSE STRUCTURES [PDF]
Slight departures from bilateral symmetry are usually associated with reduced fitness. Here we show that an insular freshwater population of Gasterosteus aculeatus exhibits spatial and temporal segregation according to the incidence and direction of asymmetry in the number of bony lateral plates, which are important predator-defense structures.

Selection for altruistic defense in structured populations [PDF]
Abstract We model natural selection for or against an anti-parasite (or anti-predator) defense allele in a host (or prey) population that is structured into many demes. The defense behavior has a fitness cost for the actor compared to non defenders (“cheaters”) in the same deme and locally reduces parasite growth rates.

Defensive structures influence fighting outcomes
In many animal species, individuals engage in fights with conspecifics over access to limited resources (e.g. mates, food, or shelter). Most theory about these intraspecific fights assumes that damage has an important role in determining the contest ...
