Transthoracic defibrillation threshold of sine and trapezoidal waveforms in defibrillation
Journal of Electrocardiology, 1989The transthoracic defibrillation threshold of trapezoidal (2.5-, 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, 40-, and 55-msec duration) and damped sine waveforms were established in groups of anesthetized greyhounds. Of the seven trapezoidal waveforms, the threshold current was lowest for the 20-msec pulse but was not significantly different for the 5-20-msec pulses (p greater

Background: The induction of ventricular fibrillation (VF) during defibrillator threshold testing of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) provokes global cerebral hypoperfusion and impaired oxygen delivery. Limited data are available on the neurophysiological effects of defibrillator threshold testing. Near infrared spectroscopy (

Synchronized shocks reduce defibrillation threshold
Proceedings of the 19th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. 'Magnificent Milestones and Emerging Opportunities in Medical Engineering' (Cat. No.97CH36136), 2002The extension of refractoriness hypothesis predicts that defibrillation success can be improved by synchronizing shocks to action potentials from cells in low intensity regions. Threshold should be lower for shocks delivered "early" in these action potentials than for shocks delivered "late".

Defibrillation threshold testing: Necessary but evil?
American Heart Journal, 1989Sudden cardiac death may be averted in patients with malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmias if they are protected with the automatic internal cardioverter defibrillator (AICD). A dramatic improvement in survival has been documented in survivors of out-of-hospital sustained ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation.

Clinical Predictors of Transvenous Biphasic Defibrillation Thresholds
The American Journal of Cardiology, 1997Transvenous lead systems have become routine for defibrillator placement. However, previous studies of clinical predictors of an adequate nonthoracotomy defibrillation threshold (DFT) evaluated monophasic waveforms or more complex lead systems, including subcutaneous patches.

Regional gap junction inhibition increases defibrillation thresholds
American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology, 2003It is clear that ischemia inhibits successful defibrillation by altering regional electro-physiology. However, the exact mechanisms are unclear. This study investigated whether regional gap junction inhibition increases biphasic shock defibrillation thresholds (DFT).
