A SPECIES OF Sarcocystis USING OWLS AS DEFINITIVE HOSTS

Journal of Wildlife Diseases, 1977
Sporulated oocysts found in the intestines of a Masked Owl (Tyto novaehollandiae) and a Barn Owl (T. alba) produced sarcocysts in mice. Schizonts were found in the livers of 3 mice that died at 7-8 days after dosing. Neither sarcocysts nor schizonts were found in chickens dosed with oocysts from a Masked Owl.

Echinostoma population regulation in experimental rodent definitive hosts

Parasitology Research, 1988
Echinostoma population regulation in the experimental rodent host is governed by the capacity of the latter to express an effective regulatory response. Parasite establishment, survival and fecundity are affected by host-related factors such as species, strain and age and by parasite-related factors such as species, age and the burden of infection. Towards the control of Echinococcus multilocularis in the definitive host in Japan

Parasitology International, 2006
Echinococcus multilocularis is distributed all over Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan. The prevalence in foxes has been around 40% in the last decade. Three trials of anthelmintic bait distribution have been conducted in Hokkaido to reduce the prevalence in foxes. In those trials, bait distribution was done along roads in the study area using cars

MOLTING OFGNATHOSTOMA DOLORESI(NEMATODA: GNATHOSTOMATOIDEA) IN THE DEFINITIVE HOST

Journal of Parasitology, 2001
Premolt, molting, and postmolt worms of Gnathostoma doloresi (Nematoda: Gnathostomatoidea) recovered from the stomach wall of naturally infected wild boars Sus scrofa leucomystax in Miyazaki, Japan, were examined morphologically. The only molt observed was that from the advanced third-stage to the adult stage.

[Hosts of Acanthocephala. II--Definitive hosts. 1. Fishes].

Annales de parasitologie humaine et comparee, 1989
From an attentive study of the largest number of available publications, we tried to establish the list of fish species harbouring fully mature Acanthocephala, i.e. females with completely developed eggs. This character is the sole on which we are allowed to assure that this fish is truly a definitive host for the parasite.

Transmission experiments on the host specificity ofHeterophyes species in 16 potential definitive hosts

Zeitschrift fr Parasitenkunde Parasitology Research, 1985
Sixteen different species of piscivorous mammals and birds were tried as experimental definitive hosts for Heterophyes heterophyes, H. aequalis and H. dispar. The hosts were classified in four categories, by fluke longevity, recovery and size, and the number of uterine eggs (embryonated/unembryonated): (1) Canidae and the cat were highly susceptible ...

MicroRNAs in opisthorchiids and their definitive hosts: Current Status and Perspectives

Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology
Opisthorchis felineus, Opisthorchis viverrini, and Clonorchis sinensis (family Opisthorchiidae) are parasitic flatworms that pose serious threats to humans in certain countries and cause opisthorchiasis/clonorchiasis. Opisthorchiid flukes parasitize the biliary tract of the host, causing cholangitis, cholecystitis, cholelithiasis and cholangiocarcinoma.

Echinostomes in the definitive host: a model for the study of host-parasite relationships.

2008
Echinostomes are hermaphroditic digeneans that parasitize, as adults, numerous vertebrate hosts of all classes. In this chapter, the main features of the development of adult echinostome in the definitive host are analyzed in detail. The stage of the echinostome in the definitive host undergoes a number of features such as metacercarial excystment ...

Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are natural definitive host of Besnoitia darlingi

Veterinary Parasitology, 2017
Bovine besnoitiosis, caused by Besnoitia besnoiti, is an economically important disease of cattle in many countries but its transmission remains a mystery. Wild felids are suspected to be its definitive hosts. The domestic cat (Felis catus) is known experimental definitive host for Besnoitia species of rodents.

Dogs are definitive hosts of Neospora caninum.

International journal for parasitology, 1998
Dogs were investigated to determine if they are definitive hosts of Neospora caninum. Four dogs were fed N. caninum tissue cysts in infected mouse tissue, and two negative control dogs were fed uninfected mouse tissue. Dog faeces were examined daily for 30 days using a sucrose flotation technique.
