Marat and the Deflection of Light [PDF]
CARLYLE'S vivid portraiture of Marat as “horse-leech” and savage revolutionist has rather obscured the fact that this “friend of the people” was a learned doctor of medicine, a physicist, and a physiologist. It is true that Carlyle refers to him as “Renovator of Human Science, Lecturer on Optics,” but the mistake about the “horse-leech” is repeated in ...

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

Gravitational Lensing Corrections in Flat LambdaCDM Cosmology
We compute the deflection angle to order (m/r_0)^2 and m/r_0*Lambda r_0^2 for a light ray traveling in a flat LambdaCDM cosmology which encounters a completely condensed mass region.

Ferroelectricity in Antiferromagnetic Wurtzite Nitrides
We establish MnSiN2${\rm MnSiN}_2$ and MnGeN2${\rm MnGeN}_2$ as aristotypes of a new multiferroic wurtzite family that simultaneously exhibits ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism with altermagnetic spin splitting. By strategically substituting alkaline‐earth metals, we predict new materials with coexisting switchable polarization, spin texture, and

Deflection of concrete slabs with GFRP reinforcement caused by shrinkage
The use of new reinforcing materials and products in the construction industry requires their thorough assessment for a variety of design situations. One of the significant effects is the shrinkage of the concrete, which in the case of asymmetrically ...

Magnetic Force Microscopy Signatures of Higher‐Order Skyrmions and Antiskyrmions
Magnetic force microscopy operated under vacuum conditions enables the qualitative identification of higher‐order skyrmions and antiskyrmions in Co/Ni multilayers at room temperature. Distinct stray‐field contrast signatures arise from vertical Bloch lines and complex domain‐wall configurations.

Electron beam standby absorber system [PDF]
Electron beam energy is absorbed by deflectors which allow beam distribution over an absorber located between the deflectors and workpiece. The undeflected beam passes through a hole in the absorber when the deflection is de-energized, when energized ...

Light Deflection and Gauss-Bonnet Theorem: Definition of Total Deflection Angle and its Applications
In this paper, we re-examine the light deflection in the Schwarzschild and the Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime. First, supposing a static and spherically symmetric spacetime, we propose the definition of the total deflection angle $\alpha$ of the light

This paper focuses on the coordination problem among borrowing countries imposing controls on capital infl ows. In a simple model of capital flows and controls, we show that inflow restrictions distort international capital flows to other countries and that, in turn, such capital flow deflection may lead to a policy response.

Imaging of Biphoton States: Fundamentals and Applications
Quantum states of two photons exhibit a rich polarization and spatial structure, which provides a fundamental resource of strongly correlated and entangled states. This review analyzes the physics of these intriguing properties and explores the various techniques and technologies available to measure them, including the state of the art of their ...
