Transitioning a unidirectional composite computer model from mesoscale to continuum

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2015
Ballistic impact on composites has been a challenging problem as seen in the abundant literature about the subject. Continuum models usually cannot properly predict deflection history on the back of the target while at the same time giving reasonable ...

3D Printing Innovations in Polymeric Porous and Patterned Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymeric foams occupy a unique structural space between dense solids and open networks, where engineered void fraction governs mechanical compliance, thermal resistance, and mass transport. Additive manufacturing now enables precise spatial control over cellular architecture, unlocking designer foam structures across applications spanning crash ...

Nonlinear vibration isolators with asymmetric stiffness

open access: yes, 2012
A vibration source is commonly coupled to a receiving structure by a vibration isolator. A key trade-off in the choice of vibration isolator is the requirement for a wide frequency range of isolation without excessive static deflection.

Evaporation of water droplets from hydrophobic and hydrophilic nanoporous microcantilevers

open access: yes, 2018
The evaporation dynamics of water droplets from the surfaces of well-defined nanoporous substrates, anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) cantilevers with various pore sizes, were investigated.

Deflection Analysis of a Nonlocal Euler–Bernoulli Nanobeam Model Resting on Two Elastic Foundations: A Generalized Differential Quadrature Approach

open access: yes, 2022
This paper provides a general formularization of the nonlocal Euler–Bernoulli nanobeam model for a bending examination of the symmetric and asymmetric cross-sectional area of a nanobeam resting over two linear elastic foundations under the effects ...

Performance evaluation, sensitivity analysis, and mitigating instabilities of Coanda effect-based flow control for a transonic jet: The investigation of shock effects

open access: yesAin Shams Engineering Journal
A flying object can be controlled in various ways. A specific flow control for a transonic jet has been proposed recently based on the Coanda effect and auxiliary flows.

Wavelets-Computational Aspects of Sterian Realistic Approach to Uncertainty Principle in High Energy Physics: A Transient Approach

open access: yesAdvances in High Energy Physics, 2013
This study presents wavelets-computational aspects of Sterian-realistic approach to uncertainty principle in high energy physics. According to this approach, one cannot make a device for the simultaneous measuring of the canonical conjugate variables in ...

Physics of Deflection

open access: yes
Deflection remains one of the most critical and yet least intuitively understood phenomena in structural engineering. Newtonian mechanics provide consistent and powerful framework for static deflection analysis. However, Newtonian formalism falls short to fully explaining subtleties of dynamic vibrations and even worse, buckling.

Invisible Polymer Walls Enhance Reorientational Optical Nonlinearity in Oligothiophene‐Doped Liquid Crystals

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The polymer wall stabilized dye‐doped liquid crystals (PWLCs) enhance the sensitivity of photoinduced molecular reorientation in dye‐doped LC systems. The PWLC with an invisible polymer wall successfully reduces the threshold intensity and functions as an optical limiter under the incidence of low intensity light laser source.

Chiral Phase Change Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates reversible, non‐volatile phase transitions in chiral Ge2${\rm Ge}_2$Sb2${\rm Sb}_2$Te5${\rm Te}_5$ (GST) nanohelices for high‐speed optical modulation of chirality and dynamic control of the state of polarization (SOP). The chiral nanostructures are fabricated using a highly directional, wafer‐scale physical vapor deposition ...
