Monitoring of sawfl y ( Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae Hymenoptera: Tenthredinidae ) infestation on spruce

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2002
A new method for evaluating damage caused by tenthredinids to Norway spruce stands is based on defoliation of the top whorls. A scale with four classes of defoliation was established that is easy to use. Defoliation can be displayed graphically on a grid

Exploiting Native Biodiversity for Invasive Species Management: The Case of Exorista larvarum as a Natural Enemy of the Invasive Box Tree Moth Cydalima perspectalis

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
The investigations evaluated the performance of the native parasitoid Exorista larvarum (L.) on last instar Cydalima perspectalis (Walker) larvae, using the factitious host Galleria mellonella (L.) as a control. Laboratory bioassays were conducted using no‐choice and choice (1:1 and 5:5) experimental designs.

Transcriptome analysis reveals common and distinct mechanisms for sheepgrass (Leymus chinensis) responses to defoliation compared to mechanical wounding.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
BackgroundHerbivore grazing is a multiple-component process that includes wounding, defoliation, and saliva deposition. Despite the extensive published research on mechanical wounding and defoliation, no analysis to identify the genes that specify ...

The Importance of the Larval Parasitoid Actia interrupta (Diptera: Tachinidae) in Low Density Eastern Spruce Budworm Populations

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Actia interrupta is an important larval tachinid parasitoid during low‐density populations of the eastern spruce budworm. In the late 1980s during the outbreak collapse, Meteorus trachynotus was initially the most important species, but was replaced by A. interrupta. Host patch size and density had no impact on the parasitism rates by A.

Defoliation percentage in two soybean cultivars at different growth stages

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Engenharia Agrícola e Ambiental, 2015
The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic variables due to the effects of different levels of defoliation in the phenological phases of two soybean cultivars. The experiment was conducted during the 2011/2012 season, in a randomized block

Rearing Istocheta aldrichi (Diptera: Tachinidae) From Field‐Collected Japanese Beetles (Popillia japonica): 1. Methods to Improve Insect Collection and Parasitoid Pupariation

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We describe methods for collecting and rearing the tachinid parasitoid Istocheta aldrichi from parasitized Japanese beetle adults. Hosts can be collected by hand and reared in the laboratory, or by using modified trap containers with added plant material and substrate to provide suitable conditions for I.

Generation Rather Than Sex Shapes Wing Morphology in Cydalima perspectalis (Lepidoptera, Crambidae): Insights From Geometric Morphometrics and Climate‐Based Projections

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
An integrated framework combining geometric morphometrics and ecological niche modeling was applied to Cydalima perspectalis to assess intergenerational morphological variation, test sexual dimorphism, and predict future distribution under climate scenarios. Wing shape effectively discriminated between generations but not between sexes.

Genomic loci associated with leaf abscission contribute to machine picking and environmental adaptability in upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Research
Introduction: Defoliation by applying defoliants before machine picking is an important agricultural practice that enhances harvesting efficiency and leads to increased raw cotton purity.

Influence of meteorological conditions and crown defoliation on tree phenology in intensive forest monitoring plots in Slovenia

open access: yesActa Silvae et Ligni, 2014
Data from the forest monitoring programme in Slovenia were used to assess the relationship between tree phenology, crown defoliation and meteorological conditions in Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur and Picea abies forests in the 2004-2013 period.

Life‐History Traits and Overwintering of Actia interrupta (Diptera: Tachinidae), a Larval Parasitoid of Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae)

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Actia interrupta is a larval tachinid parasitoid that plays a key role in regulating low‐density populations of the eastern spruce budworm. We describe its immature stages, life‐history traits, host‐searching behavior, development, and confirm its larviparous reproductive strategy.
