SWARD PRODUCTIVITY WITHIN MICRO‐PATTERNS OF HEIGHT AND FREQUENCY OF DEFOLIATION
Grass and Forage Science, 1975ABSTRACTAn experiment is described in which 10 cutting treatments were applied to plots of perennial ryegrass. In 4 treatments the swards were cut uniformly using one of the following regimes: cut to 15 cm every 2 weeks (regime hf); cut to 15 cm every 6 weeks (hi); cut to 5 cm every 2 weeks (If); cut to 5 cm every 6 weeks (li).

Growth of lucerne in response to height and frequency of defoliation
The Journal of Agricultural Science, 19651. Lucerne growing in pots was defoliated once or at intervals of 3 weeks to either 1 or 5 in. Both height and frequency of cutting affected growth of tops and roots significantly; analysis of root weights also showed that these treatments had interacted. Cumulative yield of tops and leaf area per plant were linearly related.

Production of tallgrass prairie vegetation was measured on experimental plots in which defoliation intensity and frequency were manipulated by mowing and using movable exclosures on areas chronically grazed by cattle. Defoliation history largely controlled whether or not defoliated plants overcompensated (exhibited enhanced production compared to ...

AbstractThe object of this study was to determine the importance of frequency and height of defoliation on regrowth potential of Lolium perenne. Defoliation interval was based on stage of the regrowth cycle, as indicated by leaves per tiller.Simulated swards of Lolium perenne cv Yatsyn were grown as individual plants in a glasshouse kept at a day/night

Frequency of defoliation of native and naturalized species of the Flooding Pampas (Argentina)
Grass and Forage Science, 2001This study describes the effect of herbage mass of species on defoliation patterns in a multispecies temperate–subhumid natural grassland of the Flooding Pampas at low, medium and high sward herbage mass [761 ± 8·7, 989 ± 137 and 1591 ± 44·0 kg green dry matter (DM) ha–1 respectively] maintained by continuous grazing of cattle at variable stocking ...

THE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY OF DEFOLIATION OF INDIVIDUAL TILLERS IN SET‐STOCKED SWARDS
Grass and Forage Science, 1969Individual tillers of S23 ryegrass, in three paddocks set‐stocked with sheep at widely differing grazing pressures, were marked and studied from 11 July to 19 August, 1966, and observations were made on the frequency and severity of grazing. The uprooting of tillers, and the destruction of others, were major sources of loss of records. It was found that

Agropyron smithii and Bouteloua gracilis plants from intensively grazed prairie dog colonies and from a grazing exclosure in Wind Cave National Park, South Dakota, were used to compare responses of conspecific populations with different histories of exposure to grazing and to competition for light. In separate experiments for each species, plants grown

Defoliation frequency and genotype effects on stolon and root reserves in white clover
Australian Journal of Agricultural Research, 1998The effect of defoliation frequency (1 or 3 defoliations over a 42-day period) on the starch, water soluble carbohydrate (WSC), and nitrogen contents of 3 white clover cultivars (Haifa, Irrigation, and S184) was examined. The clover plants consisted of single stolons growing in a sand/scoria mix in an unheated glasshouse and fertilised weekly with a ...

The aims of the study were to gain a better understanding of fructan metabolism regulation during regrowth of Lolium perenne, and to evaluate the role of fructans of remaining tissues as well as carbon assimilation of new leaf tissues in refoliation. Two varieties that contrast for carbohydrate metabolism, Aurora and Perma, were subject to severe and ...

THE FREQUENCY OF DEFOLIATION OF INDIVIDUAL TILLERS IN A SET‐STOCKED SWARD
Grass and Forage Science, 1966A method designed to study the defoliation of individual tillers in a set‐stocked sward is described. This was used on S23 ryegrass swards carrying 19 (medium‐stocked) and 30 (heavily‐stocked) sheep/ac.The tillers in the heavily‐stocked sward were defoliated, on average, every 7–8 days, and those in the medium‐stocked sward every 11–14 days.
