3D Printing Innovations in Polymeric Porous and Patterned Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymeric foams occupy a unique structural space between dense solids and open networks, where engineered void fraction governs mechanical compliance, thermal resistance, and mass transport. Additive manufacturing now enables precise spatial control over cellular architecture, unlocking designer foam structures across applications spanning crash ...

Design analysis of future deformable mirrors

open access: yes, 2022
Adaptive optics systems are essential in ground-based astronomical observatories and in laser communication through free space. In particular, turbulence in the atmosphere causes wavefront aberrations that set a limit on the achievable image quality.

Template‐Confined Synthesis of Shape‐Engineered Single‐Crystal Gold Microplates in Lithographically‐Defined Polymeric Patterns

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Single‐crystal gold microplates are high‐performance nanomaterials with an impressive wafer‐based application space. Progress has, however, been tempered by an inability to exert synthetic control over microplate size, shape, and positioning. In this work, control over these parameters is demonstrated using a seed‐mediated synthesis that both confines ...

Wind-induced deformations in a segmented mirror [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2002
A Zernike expansion of wind-induced deformations in a segmented mirror is described. The wind model is a frozen turbulent field with a Kolmogorov spectrum for scales smaller than the outer scale and a flat spectrum for scales larger than the outer scale.

Chiral Phase Change Nanomaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work demonstrates reversible, non‐volatile phase transitions in chiral Ge2${\rm Ge}_2$Sb2${\rm Sb}_2$Te5${\rm Te}_5$ (GST) nanohelices for high‐speed optical modulation of chirality and dynamic control of the state of polarization (SOP). The chiral nanostructures are fabricated using a highly directional, wafer‐scale physical vapor deposition ...

Structure of an Actuator and Reflective Coat for the Deformable Mirror

open access: yes, 2010
By using conventional micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) processes, we have successfully developed a highly accurate and easily controllable deformable mirror with a simple structure.

X-ray speckle reduction using a high-speed piezoelectric deformable mirror system

open access: yesHigh Power Laser Science and Engineering
An advanced deformable Kirkpatrick–Baez (K-B) mirror system was developed, equipped with high-speed piezoelectric actuators, and designed to induce beam decoherence and significantly enhance the quality of X-ray imaging by minimizing undesirable speckles

Dye‐Initiated Chirped Cholesteric Polymer Networks Exhibiting Broadband Dissipative Chiral Photonic Bands

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dye‐based photoinitiator acting as a structure‐directing element, guides the formation of a cholesteric polymer network that behaves as a chirped photonic structure with dissipative chiral coupling. Photopolymerization freezes a depth‐dependent helical pitch, broadening the Bragg resonance spectrum.

All-reflective optical bifocal zooming system without moving elements based on deformable mirror for space camera application

open access: yes, 2013
The space camera with variable focal length is capable of capturing images with variable resolution and variable field of view. This is useful for space-borne reconnaissance because the camera can switch between coarse and fine reconnaissance flexibly ...
