Friction properties and deformation mechanisms of halite(-mica) gouges from low to high sliding velocities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The evolution of friction as a function of slip rate is important in understanding earthquake nucleation and propagation. Many laboratory experiments investigating friction of fault rocks are either conducted in the low velocity regime (10−810−8–View the

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Interactive Volume Deformation Based on Model Fitting Lattices

open access: yes
Volume visualization, which is a relatively new branch in scientific visualization, not only displays surface features of a model, but enables an intuitive presentation of the internal information of the object. Its comprehensive visualization algorithms

NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF HYDRAULICALLY INDUCED CASING DEFORMATION IN SHALE RESERVOIR [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Hydraulic fracturing stimulation is widely conducted to enhance hydrocarbon production in low-permeability reservoirs. However, the massive fracturing can lead to the well failure by compromising well integrity.

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Solid‐State Diffusion and Intermetallic Phase Formation in Roll‐Bonded Mg–Zn Composites With Kirigami‐Patterned Inlay

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mg–Zn composites with a thickness of 0.21 mm were fabricated using roll bonding of a kirigami‐patterned Mg alloy inlay within a Zn matrix. Thermal activation following this process led to the formation of tailored intermetallic structures, which provided the composite with enhanced flexural strength.
