Mars Express investigations of Phobos and Deimos

Planetary and Space Science, 2014
The Mars Express mission was launched in June 2003 and was inserted into orbit around Mars in December 2003. Its main objective is to study the Mars' subsurface, surface, atmosphere and interaction with the solar wind. A secondary objective is to study the martian moons, in particular the largest one Phobos, thanks to a near polar and elliptical orbit ...

The surfaces of Phobos and Deimos

Vistas in Astronomy, 1978
Knowledge acquired from spacecraft observations of the surfaces of Phobos and Deimos is reviewed. Consideration is given to: the first spacecraft data - Mariner 7; the first systematic exploration - Mariner 9; surface texture and composition from Mariner 9 data; surface morphology from Mariner 9; and Viking results.

The Phobos and Deimos effects

Advances in Space Research, 1993
Abstract Although the most novel part of the Phobos mission was not realized the Phobos-moon events were distintly manifested. Some of them were observed during crossings of the Phobos orbit, the others during the closest encounters (

Predicted lightcurves of Phobos and Deimos

Icarus, 1976
Using Mariner 9 results on the shapes, rotation periods, and photometric functions of Phobos and Deimos, approximate orbital light curves are calculated for the two Martian satellites. The prediction is that both Phobos and Deimos should show orbital brightness fluctuations detectable from earth.

Deimos Dewar System

1998
Design work resumed on the DEIMOS detector system in September 1996. The major change from the initial description is the inclusion of the focus and one axis of the flexure control system inside the vacuum head of the dewar. Traditionally Lick has not included any active stages inside the vacuum vessel on visible light instruments.

Surface features of Phobos and Deimos

Icarus, 1979
Viking Orbiter images have provided nearly complete coverage of the two satellites of Mars and have been used to construct maps of the surface features of Phobos and Deimos. The satellites have radically different appearances although nearly all features on both objects were formed directly or indirectly by impact cratering.

Phobos und Deimos

1978
