Science Exploration Architecture for Phobos and Deimos: The Role of Phobos and Deimos in the Future Exploration of Mars

Advances in Space Research, 2018
Abstract Phobos and Deimos are the only natural satellites of the terrestrial planets, other than our Moon. Despite decades of revolutionary Mars exploration and plans to send humans to the surface of Mars in the 2030’s, there are many strategic knowledge gaps regarding the moons of Mars, specifically regarding the origin and evolution of these ...

Mars Express investigations of Phobos and Deimos

Planetary and Space Science, 2014
The Mars Express mission was launched in June 2003 and was inserted into orbit around Mars in December 2003. Its main objective is to study the Mars' subsurface, surface, atmosphere and interaction with the solar wind. A secondary objective is to study the martian moons, in particular the largest one Phobos, thanks to a near polar and elliptical orbit ...

The surfaces of Phobos and Deimos

Vistas in Astronomy, 1978
Knowledge acquired from spacecraft observations of the surfaces of Phobos and Deimos is reviewed. Consideration is given to: the first spacecraft data - Mariner 7; the first systematic exploration - Mariner 9; surface texture and composition from Mariner 9 data; surface morphology from Mariner 9; and Viking results.

The Phobos and Deimos effects

Advances in Space Research, 1993
Abstract Although the most novel part of the Phobos mission was not realized the Phobos-moon events were distintly manifested. Some of them were observed during crossings of the Phobos orbit, the others during the closest encounters (

Deimos Dewar System

1998
Design work resumed on the DEIMOS detector system in September 1996. The major change from the initial description is the inclusion of the focus and one axis of the flexure control system inside the vacuum head of the dewar. Traditionally Lick has not included any active stages inside the vacuum vessel on visible light instruments.

Phobos und Deimos

1978

Spacecraft imaging of Phobos and Deimos

Vistas in Astronomy, 1978
A series of lower- and higher-resolution pictures of Phobos and Deimos taken from Viking spacecraft is presented. The imaging data imply that the two asteroid-size bodies may indeed have originated in the asteroid belt and may be composed of primordial material from the solar nebula.

Dynamical characteristics of Phobos and Deimos

Reviews of Geophysics, 1972
The orbital properties of the two small Martian satellites, Phobos and Deimos, are discussed, as well as those dynamical constants of Mars that can be determined from the satellite orbits. A secular acceleration of the mean motion of Phobos was once thought to exist, but now, on the basis of the recent work of G. A.
