Probability Alters Delay Discounting, but Delay Does Not Alter Probability Discounting
The Psychological Record, 2014Delay and probability discounting occur when the subjective value of an outcome changes because its delivery is either delayed or uncertain, respectively. Although theorists have argued whether these processes are one in the same or distinct, few studies have investigated if and how they interact.

Discounting of Delayed Rewards as an Endophenotype
Biological Psychiatry, 2015The article by Anokhin et al. (1) in this issue of Biological Psychiatry provides strong evidence of the heritability of the neurobehavioral decision process referred to as the discounting of delayed rewards, or temporal discounting (i.e., the devaluation of a reward as a function of delay to its delivery) (2). Using a standard psychophysical titration

The discounting model selector: Statistical software for delay discounting applications
Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2017Original, open‐source computer software was developed and validated against established delay discounting methods in the literature. The software executed approximate Bayesian model selection methods from user‐supplied temporal discounting data and computed the effective delay 50 (ED50) from the best performing model.

Effects of delay sequence in a delay discounting task
Behavioural ProcessesDelay discounting refers to the decrease in subjective value of a reward as the delay until its receipt increases. In the present study we assessed the effects of the sequence of delay blocks (increasing or decreasing) on discounting and the data systematicity using a titrating procedure with human participants.

Delay discounting in mild cognitive impairment
Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, 2016Patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) may make suboptimal decisions particularly in complex situations, and this could be due to temporal discounting, the tendency to prefer immediate rewards over delayed but larger rewards. The present study proposes to evaluate intertemporal preferences in MCI patients as compared to healthy controls.Fifty ...

Delay Discounting and Impulsive Choice in the Rat
Current Protocols in Neuroscience, 2007AbstractDelay discounting refers to the degree to which immediate outcomes exhibit more influence over behavior than outcomes which are delayed. Impulsive choice, in the context of delay discounting, is generally considered as an increased preference for immediate over delayed outcomes, even where the delayed outcomes are more advantageous. In the past

Delay and probability discounting in risky decisions
2014 5th IEEE Conference on Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom), 2014This study jointly examined delay and probability discounting in risky decisions comparing gamblers and nongamblers participants. In order to do so, in a lottery task, the amount of winning, the probability to obtain it, and the delay for winning were systematically varied. The hypothesis according to which gamblers, compared to not gamblers, preferred

Weakness of Will and Delay Discounting
2023AbstractBreaking one’s dieting rule or resolution to quit smoking, procrastination, convenient lies, even the failure of entire nations to follow through with plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions or keep a pandemic in check—these phenomena have been discussed by philosophers and behavioural scientists as examples of weakness of will and delay ...

Towards validation of delay discounting in the pigeon
Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 2018A series of procedures were conducted in an attempt to assess various forms of validity related to the use of pigeons in research on delay discounting. In separate experimental arrangements, pigeons pressed a treadle, pecked a lit key, pecked a darkened key, or pecked a lit key with a hold as the required response.

Food reinforcement, delay discounting and obesity
Physiology & Behavior, 2010Choice is a central construct in behavioral economics, with choice research divided into choice of concurrent alternative reinforcers, which is conceptualized as relative reinforcing value, or choice of small immediate versus larger delayed rewards, usually of the same commodity, which is conceptualized as delay of gratification and delay discounting ...
