Delta modulation

IEEE Spectrum, 1970
The idea of coding the human voice into digital pulses was conceived more than three decades ago; exploitation had to await the ushering in of the transistor era. Since then, coding systems gradually have improved. One of the latest and most efficient schemes is delta modulation.

Pulse-width modulation in sigma-delta modulators

Proceedings of 2010 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2010
Time-encoding machines map analog or multi-bit digital signals to a binary stream. The information contained in the input signal is preserved by the high resolution achieved in the time domain. Pulse-Width Modulators (PWMs) rely on a similar operation principle.

Generalizations of \(\delta\)-lifting modules

2013
Summary: In this paper we introduce the notions of \(G_1^*L\)-module and \(G_2^*L\)-module which are two proper generalizations of \(\delta\)-lifting modules. We give some characterizations and properties of these modules. We show that a \(G_2^*L\)-module decomposes into a semisimple submodule \(M_1\) and a submodule \(M_2\) of \(M\) such that every ...

Adaptive Delta Modulation

IETE Journal of Research, 1971
In this paper, design principles of a delta modulator are discussed to arrive at the design parameters. For a sampling rate of 25 K/bits and reference frequency of speech at 1·12 KHz, the maximum signal to quantization noise ratio is found to be around 24 db.

Delta Modulation of Data Signals

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1974
This paper is an analytical study to determine the performance of single-integration delta-modulation (\DeltaM) encoders with inputs which are various voice-band data signals. Signal-to-quantizing noise ratios S/N are calculated for \DeltaM bit rates from 16 to 96 K bits/s.

Step Response of an Adaptive Delta Modulator

Bell System Technical Journal, 1976
N. S. Jayant has proposed a simple but effective form of adaptive delta modulation which uses two positive parameters, P and Q, to adjust the step size. The values P = Q = 1 describe linear delta modulation (LDM), and Jayant has recommended using Q = 1/P and 1 1, it converges to the new level when PnQ < 1, and when PnQ = 1, it eventually settles into

Single-Integration, Adaptive Delta Modulation

Bell System Technical Journal, 1975
An estimate of optimum performance is derived for a single-integration, adaptive delta modulator. Several simulations of adaptive delta modulators with single integrators have all produced signal-to-noise ratios near or below the estimate. The derivations presented here indicate that the performance of a single-integration delta modulator is dependent ...

Statistical delta modulation

Proceedings of the IEEE, 1967
This report describes the results of a study of Statistical Delta Modulation (SDM), a new method of digital transmission of analog information [1]. In this method the system design is tailored to the statistical properties of the input data so as to provide analog reconstruction values with a minimum mean squared error.

A simple circuit for sigma-delta /delta modulation

International Symposium on Signals, Circuits and Systems, 2005. ISSCS 2005., 2006
This article represents a simple circuit which can function either as sigma-delta or delta modulation. The circuit is composed of three OTAs, a capacitor and two resistors which basically form Schmitt-trigger circuit When input signal is present and fed to the inverting input node of OTA1, the circuit acts as a sigma-delta modulation.
