Increasing artificial light at night enhances salmonid predator foraging efficiency in an urbanized lake

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 71, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Artificial light at night (ALAN) poses a threat to ecosystems globally. It includes both direct and indirect light, or skyglow, which occurs when ALAN scatters in the atmosphere, extending beyond its original source. We analyzed ALAN trends in Lake Washington, WA, from 2014 to 2023 using Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS ...

Eastward Migration or Marshward Dispersal: Exercising Survey Data to Elicit an Understanding of Seasonal Movement of Delta Smelt

open access: yesSan Francisco Estuary and Watershed Science, 2013
Differing and confounding understandings of the seasonal movements of the delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus) in the San Francisco Estuary persist nearly 2 decades after its listing as threatened under the federal and state endangered species acts.

Recycling End‐of‐Life Solid Oxide Cell Interconnect Assemblies into Commercial‐Grade AISI 304 Stainless Steels

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4363-4381, August 2026.
This study validates a recycling pathway for converting interconnect assemblies from end‐of‐life SOC stacks into commercial‐grade AISI 304 steels. Using scrap‐based steelmaking operations, austenitic cast steels with <4.0% δ‐ferrite are successfully produced.

Effect of Intrinsic Carbon in Hot Briquetted Iron on Melting and Refining Efficiency under Electric Arc Furnace Conditions for Sustainable Steelmaking with Active Use of H2‐Reduced Iron

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4126-4137, August 2026.
The melting behavior of hot briquetted iron (HBI) is observed and compared with FactSage computing simulation. When using HBI in an electric arc furnace process, a proper design of intrinsic carbon content in HBI, charging ratio of HBI, and addition of lime are proposed to be essential to control the slag volume, maintain slag basicity, and mitigate ...

Effective Equilibrium Reaction Zone Modeling of Hydrogen Plasma Smelting Reduction: A Scenario Analysis

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4138-4161, August 2026.
The study presents a dynamic zonal model for hydrogen plasma smelting reduction (HPSR) in direct current arc furnaces, predicting time‐dependent behavior of metal, slag, and off‐gas. The study considers various industrial scenarios to quantify energy demand, hydrogen utilization, degree of reduction, and other operational sensitivities.

Recycling of Mill Scale Into High‐Purity Iron Through Hydrogen‐Based Reduction

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 8, Page 4162-4175, August 2026.
Mill scale, an iron oxide–rich steel by‐product, is difficult to recycle due to impurities. This study evaluates hydrogen‐based direct reduction and hydrogen plasma smelting reduction as low‐carbon recycling routes. Impurity segregation limits reduction kinetics. Direct reduction achieves 92% conversion in 180 min, while plasma reduction reaches 91% in

CRISPR‐based environmental DNA detection for a rare endangered estuarine species

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA
Environmental DNA (eDNA) methods complement traditional aquatic monitoring surveys and are especially advantageous for rare and listed species to detect spatial and temporal distribution patterns.
