The medically important dematiaceous fungi and their identification
Mycoses, 1991Summary.Dematiaceous fungi include a large group of organisms that are darkly pigmented (dark brown, olivaceous, or black). In most cases the pigment is melanin, and specifically, dihydroxyna‐phthalene melanin. The diseases produced include chromoblastomycosis, eumycotic mycetoma, and phaeohyphomycosis.

Therapy of infections caused by dematiaceous fungi
Expert Review of Anti-Infective Therapy, 2005Dematiaceous fungi are responsible for a wide variety of clinical syndromes, from local infections due to trauma, to disseminated infection in immunocompromised patients. These fungi are unique owing to the presence of melanin in their cell walls, which imparts the characteristic dark color to their spores and hyphae.

Dematiaceous fungi mimicking a conjunctival melanoma.
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2013An 85-year-old, immunocompetent man was referred to the authors due to the presence of an enlarging, pigmented mass of the conjunctiva concerning for a conjunctival melanoma. Wide excision of the mass revealed a pigmented or "dematiaceous" fungus. He was treated with topical natamycin, and the lesion healed well without any evidence of recurrence ...

In vitro evaluation of terbinafine and itraconazole against dematiaceous fungi
Medical Mycology, 1998Two hundred and three isolates representing 15 species of filamentous ascomycetes were evaluated against terbinafine and itraconazole using a modification of the NCCLS M27-A standard reference method for yeasts. The MIC ranges and geometric means were similar, although terbinafine tended to have the lowest values. The loculoIascomycete clade tested had

Abstract The dematiaceous fungal pathogens, classified by their darkly pigmented hyphae, cause infection in both immunosuppressed and immunocompetent individuals. Infections may present as chromoblastomycosis, mycetoma, and a spectrum of phaeohyphomycoses varying in severity. The route of infection may be through traumatic inoculation,

Impairment of Immune Response against Dematiaceous Fungi in Card9 Knockout Mice
Mycopathologia, 2016Dematiaceous fungi are a large group of pathogens that can cause a wide range of diseases in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. Based on our previous finding of caspase recruitment domain-containing protein 9 (CARD9) mutations in patients with subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis caused by Phialophora verrucosa (P.

Infections Caused by Dematiaceous Fungi: Chromoblastomycosis and Phaeohyphomycosis
Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, 1988Because of the increased incidence of infections caused by dematiaceous fungi, it is important to clearly define the conceptual basis for the clinical nomenclature for infections caused by these fungi. When considering dematiaceous fungal infections, there is a continuum of diseases that can be separated into the three categories of chromoblastomycosis,

Keratomycosis: clinical and microbiologic experience with dematiaceous fungi
Ophthalmology, 2000To assess the significance of dematiaceous fungi in the causation of keratomycosis.Retrospective, noncomparative case series.Eighty-eight cases of dematiaceous fungal keratitis seen at the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India from January 1991 through December 1996.Only culture-proven cases were analyzed.Predisposing factors, clinical ...
