Essential fish habitats of demersal fish in the western Arabian Gulf
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2021Information about habitats occupied by aquatic organisms while completing critical stages of their lives, called essential fish habitats, is crucial for their sustainability. In this work, we determine essential fish habitats (nursery and spawning grounds) of several fish species inhabiting Saudi territorial waters in the western Arabian Gulf using ...

Pineal organs in deep demersal fish
Cell and Tissue Research, 2002We studied ten species of demersal fish from depths of 1500-4800 m, i.e. regions of the abyss outside the reach of sunlight. A pineal window in the skin and/or the skull, often found in mesopelagic fish, was never observed in demersal specimens. Nine species had a well-developed pineal organ, with light- and electron-microscopic features, well known in

Evidence for non-selective ingestion of microplastic in demersal fish
Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2019Microplastics have been observed in >100 species of fish, with considerable variability in levels of contamination in different species and different geographic locations. Here, we investigated the incidence of microplastic in five species of demersal fish (four wild-caught species and one from a mariculture business) in Hong Kong. We observed that 54%

New Zealand Demersal Fish Assemblages
Environmental Biology of Fishes, 2002Demersal fish assemblages in the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone were identified using presence–absence data from 19 215 bottom trawl tows made over a 37-year period. The dataset spanned latitudes 34–54°S and depths of 4–1500 m. A total of 123 taxa occurred in more than 1% of the tows (121 fish and 2 squid).

Brain Areas in Abyssal Demersal Fishes
Brain, Behavior and Evolution, 2001Four areas of the brain which receive primary projections from chemical senses ([1] olfactory bulb, [2] gustatory area including facial and vagal lobes), the eye ([3] optic tectum), and mechanosensory, and-hair-cell based systems i.e. the lateral line, vestibular and auditory systems ([4] trigeminal and octavolateral regions) have been studied and ...
