Inequality and Democracy [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2019
The paper is about the political consequences of increasing economic inequality in Western economies. Political theorists have often stressed that democracy is in troubles when its population is not broadly uniform in income and wealth because unequal economic resources can easily translate into a surplus of political resources in the hands of the ...

Mitigation of Cracks in High‐Performance Nickel‐Based Superalloys in Powder Bed Fusion Laser Beam of Metals Using a Metal Matrix Composite Approach

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
High‐performance nickel‐based superalloys are often not processible in additive manufacturing (AM) due to hot cracking. The findings in this manuscript propose an efficient method to mitigate cracking and enhance mechanical properties of these alloys by producing a metal matrix composite, contributing to the material and process perspective of the AM ...

Efficient and Scalable Radiative Cooling for Photovoltaics Using Solution‐Processable and Solar‐Transparent Mesoporous Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graded refractive index (GRI) structures are prepared from the layer‐by‐layer spray coating of the mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles, showing high solar transparency and thermal emissivity. Under outdoor conditions, after 50 days, the GRI‐coated photovoltaics show on average 6.65 ± 1.48 °C lower than that of the non‐coated references, maintaining 80.9 ± 8 ...

The Transformative Power of Anchor Institutions

open access: yesMetropolitan Universities, 2019
Everyone knows by now that colleges and universities are “anchor institutions”: important place-based engines that play key roles in local economies. But the raw facts of size and place are just the beginning of the story; what matters is not just the ...

Stabilized Intermediate Phase Via Pseudo‐Halide Anions Toward Highly Efficient and Light‐Soaking Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
The formate pseudo‐halide anion is strategically introduced at the buried interface to stabilize the intermediate phases formed during perovskite crystallization. The controlled crystallization enhances crystallinity and alleviates tensile strain, eliminating residual PbI2 near the buried interface.
