Dendrogram Seriation Using Simulated Annealing
Information Visualization, 2003Seriation is the ordering of the leaves of a dendrogram, such that leaves representing similar items are placed near each other according to some metric, within the constraints of the cluster tree. Such ordering greatly aids the interpretation of the relations represented by the dendrogram and reduces visual misinterpretation caused by unrelated items

Dendrogram topology: capacity and retrieval
Canadian Journal of Botany, 1976This paper defines the 'capacity' of dichotomous dendrograms of a given order as the total number of topologically different cases. By using a combinatorial approach based on the number of possible cases for each part of a root dichotomy and extending this through the dendrogram, the capacity for each order may be calculated.

Random dendrograms for classifiability testing
1998We propose statistical tests to decide between an hypothesis of non classifiability of the data against the presence of a classification in some simple situations. We consider only the single link algorithm and two null hypotheses of non classifiability, according to whether the dissimilarities or the objects themselves are i.i.d.
