끌레베르는 속담을 문장인 동시에 명칭인 문장적 명칭으로 규정하며, 이러한 이중적 위상으로 속담이 나타내는 특성들을 설명한다. 하지만 문장의 형태를 띠고 있는 속담이 어떻게 명칭으로 작용하게 되는지에 관해서는 다루지 않고 있다. 이에 본 논문은 속담이 지니는 두 가지 위상을 검토하면서, 한 개인의 은유적 표현으로 발화된 문장이 명칭의 위상을 지니는 특수한 기호로서 언어 속에 고정되는 과정을 일반화된 관용구파생 개념을 적용하여 살펴 볼 것이다.
