The C/CO ratio in dense interstellar clouds

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1987
The cosmic-ray-induced photodestruction (CRIP) of CO in dense interstellar clouds is investigated by means of numerical simulations to determine the C/CO abundance ratio. The model takes the dependence of C/CO on the rotational temperature, abundance, and velocity distribution of the CO into account.

Binding Energies of Interstellar Complex Organic Molecules on Water Ice Surfaces: A Quantum Chemical Investigation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Interstellar dust grains are enveloped by ices of frozen molecules in cold, dense regions of the interstellar medium (ISM), which are also observed in the gas phase. Whether a species is in the solid or gaseous state is governed by its binding energy (BE)

Interstellar and cometary dust [PDF]

open access: yes
Aspects of interstellar dust which are known from direct observation will be discussed. Some specific difficulties that various theories have in explaining the observations will be presented.

Pressure and Star Formation in LITTLE THINGS Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The surface densities of star formation, Σ _SFR , in 24 dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxies from the LITTLE THINGS survey are combined with gas surface densities and midplane pressures to examine the correlations found previously for spiral galaxies.

ACES: The Magnetic Field in Large Filaments in the Galactic Center

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Galactic center (GC) is an extreme region of the Milky Way that is host to a complex set of thermal and nonthermal structures. In particular, the GC contains high-density gas and dust that is collectively referred to as the Central Molecular Zone ...

High-sensitivity Molecular Line Observations toward the L1544 Prestellar Core Challenge Current Models

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The increased sensitivity and spectral resolution of observed spectra toward the prestellar core L1544 are challenging the current physical and chemical models.

The cycling of carbon into and out of dust

open access: yes, 2014
Observational evidence seems to indicate that the depletion of interstellar carbon into dust shows rather wide variations and that carbon undergoes rather rapid recycling in the interstellar medium (ISM).

Cloud Formation by Supernova Implosion

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The deposition of energy and momentum by supernova explosions has been subject to numerous studies in the past few decades. However, while there has been some work that focused on the transition from the adiabatic to the radiative stage of a supernova ...

The chemistry of phosphorus in dense interstellar clouds

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1984
Laboratory experiments show that the ion-molecule chemistry of phosphorus is significantly different from that of nitrogen in dense interstellar clouds. The PH3 molecule is not readily formed by gas-phase, ion-molecule reactions in these regions. Laboratory results used in a simple kinetic model indicate that the most abundant molecule containing ...

Molecular Hydrogen Formation via Vibrational Excitation of Partially Superhydrogenated Pyrenes

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
While polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are now accepted to be abundant in interstellar space, the abundance and influence of superhydrogenated PAHs (HPAHs) in the interstellar medium (ISM) are still under investigation.
