Dense medium separation using a teetered bed separator
Minerals Engineering, 1999Abstract A Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) was used autogenously, and with a range of media, to study the dense medium separation of a coal feed slurry, −2.00+0.375 mm in size. The feed slurry consisted of separate portions of a clean coal fraction, and a mineral matter fraction. A series of experiments were conducted using (i) the clean coal only, (ii)

Characterisation of Ferrosilicon Dense Medium Separation Material
Hyperfine Interactions, 2003Ferrosilicon is used in the dense medium separation of iron ore at Kumba resources, Sishen, South Africa. Due to high cost and losses that occur during use, maximum recovery by means of magnetic separation is aimed for. The purpose of this project was to determine the characteristics of the unused Fe-Si and then to characterise the changes that occur ...

Appraisal and Optimisation of Dense Medium Plant Separations
Coal Preparation, 1992An extensive plant-orientated testwork campaign was undertaken to quantify and determine the causes of significant dense medium cyclone operating inefficiencies. Comprehensive plant trials, with 20–30 people sampling up to 100 process (medium and coal) streams simultaneously for eight hour shifts permitted both magnetite media and coal processing ...

Modelling and simulation of dense medium drum separators
2020The behaviour of dense medium drum separators at Hamersley Iron Ltd's iron ore concentrator and Groote Eylandt Mining Company Pty Ltd's manganese concentrator was studied. Sampling and density tracer techniques were used to collect drum partitioning data over a range of operating conditions and medium compositions.

Studies on a Vorsyl separator as an alternate for a dense medium cyclone
International Journal of Mineral Processing, 1998Abstract In India, a major portion of metallurgical coal is produced by the dense medium cyclone process. A Vorsyl separator, a centrifugal dense medium separator, is proposed as a possible alternate to the dense medium cyclone. Experiments were carried out in the laboratory on a 76-mm Vorsyl separator and a dense medium cyclone for treating the same

Dynamic Modelling for Dense Medium Separation in Coal Beneficiation
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2010Abstract Often the most difficult step in establishing a control system is the development of a suitable dynamic process model. As such a model is not available elsewhere, a first principle dynamic mathematical model was developed for a coal dense medium separation circuit. Each unit operation was modelled individually and then integrated together to

Degradation of ferrosilicon media in dense medium separation circuits
Minerals Engineering, 1992Abstract Observations on the degradation of various types of atomized and milled ferrosilicon in laboratory trials and operating DMS plants are presented. Mechanisms contributing to the loss of media through mechanical disintegration and electrochemical corrosion are identified.

Performance Evaluation Practices at Dense Medium Separation Circuits
2016In this paper, the application of density tracers for performance prediction of dense medium circuits and the strategies for identification of potential problems in operating plants are outlined, and the results obtained at various performance prediction and evaluation studies performed in various coal washing plants are summarized.
