Lifestyle of a Roman Imperial community: ethnobotanical evidence from dental calculus of the Ager Curensis inhabitants

open access: yesJournal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine, 2019
BackgroundThe analysis of ancient calcified dental plaque is a powerful archaeobotanical method to elucidate the key role of the plants in human history.MethodsIn this research, by applying both optic microscopy and gas chromatography mass spectrometry ...

A Flexible‐Substrate 5‐µm‐Diameter Needle Electrode: Minimizing Neuronal Death and Enabling Year‐Long Neural Recording

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
An electrophysiological recording technology that uses a 5‐µm‐diameter microneedle electrode device is presented. Due to the remarkable small dimension of the microneedle, the electrode provides minimal invasive neural recording in a mouse brain and enables long‐term recording exceeding the year‐long duration.

Biofilm Implication in Oral Diseases of Dogs and Cats

open access: yesScientific Papers Animal Science and Biotechnologies, 2023
The importance of biofilm in disease processes in humans and animals is now widely recognized. In animal species, the risk of infection is probably greater than the risk in humans. This is due to the difference in animal housing and living environments –

Electrophotographic Powder Application for Surface Functionalization of Polymer Parts with Thin Silver‐Nanoadditivated Bactericidal Layers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Polyamide 12 powder nanoadditivated with laser‐synthesized silver nanoparticles is deposited and sintered on polymer parts via EPA‐PBF‐LB/P. The thin surface coating (140 µm) inhibits E. coli and S. aureus bacteria growth and significantly increases the UV light absorption, whereas the mechanical and thermal properties remain unchanged due to minimal ...

Relief food subsistence revealed by microparticle and proteomic analyses of dental calculus from victims of the Great Irish Famine

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, 2019
Significance This study provides direct evidence of the dependency on relief food in Ireland around the time of the Great Famine (1845 to 1852) through dental calculus analysis of archaeological human remains. The findings show a dominance of corn (maize)

Statistical validation of a deep learning algorithm for dental anomaly detection in intraoral radiographs using paired data [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This article describes the clinical validation study setup, statistical analysis and results for a deep learning algorithm which detects dental anomalies in intraoral radiographic images, more specifically caries, apical lesions, root canal treatment defects, marginal defects at crown restorations, periodontal bone loss and calculus. The study compares
