Bacterial sex in dental plaque
Genes are transferred between bacteria in dental plaque by transduction, conjugation, and transformation. Membrane vesicles can also provide a mechanism for horizontal gene transfer. DNA transfer is considered bacterial sex, but the transfer is not parallel to processes that we associate with sex in higher organisms.

Antibacterial effects of natural compounds on biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans
Abstract Streptococcus mutans is the main cariogenic pathogen in the oral cavity, considered to contribute toward oral diseases. S. mutans is predominantly entrapped in plaque biofilms. Objectives In this study, we surveyed the antibacterial activity of natural compounds in terms of the biofilm production of S. mutans. Material and Methods We extracted

Update of the CLRP eye plaque brachytherapy database for photon-emitting sources [PDF]
Purpose: To update and extend the Carleton Laboratory for Radiotherapy Physics (CLRP) Eye Plaque (EP) dosimetry database for low-energy photon-emitting brachytherapy sources using egs_brachy, an open-source EGSnrc application. The previous database, CLRP_EPv1, contained datasets for the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study (COMS) plaques (2008). The new

Towards Earlier Detection of Oral Diseases On Smartphones Using Oral and Dental RGB Images [PDF]
Oral diseases such as periodontal (gum) diseases and dental caries (cavities) affect billions of people across the world today. However, previous state-of-the-art models have relied on X-ray images to detect oral diseases, making them inaccessible to remote monitoring, developing countries, and telemedicine.

Construction of unbiased dental template and parametric dental model for precision digital dentistry [PDF]
Dental template and parametric dental models are important tools for various applications in digital dentistry. However, constructing an unbiased dental template and accurate parametric dental models remains a challenging task due to the complex anatomical and morphological dental structures and also low volume ratio of the teeth.

Quasi-static responses of marine mussel plaques attached to deformable wet substrates under directional tensions [PDF]
Quantifying the response of marine mussel plaque attachment on wet surfaces remains a significant challenge to a mechanistic understanding of plaque adhesion. Here, we developed a customised microscopy system combined with two-dimensional (2D) in-situ digital image correlation (DIC) to quantify the in-plane deformation of a deformable substrate that ...
