Potential metabolic records in isotope signals of chondrichthyan hard tissues

Abstract Recent advances have demonstrated that the field metabolic rates (FMRs) of teleost fishes can be quantified from stable isotope compositions of carbonate‐biomineralized otoliths. Bones and teeth, in addition to bioapatite, contain carbonate and should retain a similar isotopic expression of metabolic rate.

Lungfish‐like antero‐labial tooth addition and amphibian‐like enameloid‐enamel transition in the coronoid of a Devonian stem actinopterygian

The tooth patterning logic, which cannot be inferred from surface morphology, is revealed by visualizing buried tooth remnants in 3D. The primary teeth are added labially, initially organized in radial rows, which transition into linear rows where the coronoid becomes slender.

Almost billfish: convergent longirostry, micro‐dentition, and possible glandular sinuses in a large teleost fish from the Upper Cretaceous of Northern Italy

A fossil rostrum fragment of a large teleost fish from the Upper Cretaceous of Northern Italy reveals remarkable anatomical convergences with Cenozoic and Recent billfishes (marlins, swordfishes, and akin). The extinct group Plethodidae independently acquired a long snout, micro‐teeth, and oil‐gland sinuses well before the evolution of true billfishes.
