上顎総義歯における床下介在唾液は, 口腔乾燥症などにおいては義歯の装着が不可能であることを考えれば, 義歯使用者にとって必要不可欠のものであり, また, 上顎総義歯の維持に及ぼす床下介在唾液の役割に限局して考えてみると, 唾液の性状, 量などが床下粘膜や床用材料と微妙に影響を及ぼしあっていることがわかる. 義歯の維持に関与する要素には, Physical factor, Physiologic factor, Psychologic factor, Mechanical factor, Surgical factorなどが考えられるが, 上顎総義歯においては特にPhysical factorは重要であり, これは大きく分けて次の4つに分類できる.
