Las esponjas se encuentran en diversos sustratos duros, tanto naturales como artificiales. En estos últimos son pocos los estudios realizados en Colombia. En este trabajo se listan y describen brevemente las especies de esponjas asociadas con rompeolas en el departamento de Sucre.

Revisiting the taxonomy and nomenclature of Phyla, a small genus of Verbenaceae
