Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Time-dependent predictors of loss to follow-up in HIV care in low-resource settings: A competing risks approach.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Loss to follow-up (LTFU) remains a major challenge in HIV care, particularly in resource-limited settings. While several studies have identified its predictors, many have neglected the competing risks of transfer out and death, as well as the dynamic ...

Pathways and pitfalls: a qualitative study of student experiences in biomedical science education

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Biomedical science students from underrepresented backgrounds face barriers including financial strain, disrupted laboratory access and cultural exclusion. Peer networks provide vital support when institutional systems are difficult to navigate. To create inclusive learning environments and achieve academic success, educators should blend active, hands‐

Risk-adjusted cUSUM control charts for shared frailty survival models with application to hip replacement outcomes: a study using the NJR dataset

open access: yesBMC Medical Research Methodology, 2019
Background Continuous monitoring of surgical outcomes after joint replacement is needed to detect which brands’ components have a higher than expected failure rate and are therefore no longer recommended to be used in surgical practice.

Competing-risks model for prediction of small-for-gestational-age neonates at 36 weeks' gestation.

open access: yes, 2022
To develop further a new competing risks model for the prediction of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates, by including sonographically estimated fetal weight (EFW) and biomarkers of impaired placentation at 36 weeks' gestation.

Effect of terahertz irradiation on DNA damage repair in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We investigated the effect of terahertz (THz) wave irradiation on DNA double‐strand break (DSB) repair in living cells. We found that THz irradiation enhanced DSB repair at specific frequencies, whereas heat treatment inhibited it, indicating that this effect is nonthermal and frequency‐specific.

In silico and in vitro exploration of a tyrosinase for biocatalytic production of catechols

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Tyrosinase from Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum is a promising biocatalyst for producing valuable catechols from monophenol substrates. This tyrosinase is uniquely suited to this due to its high monophenolase : diphenolase ratio. We combined in silico docking and in vivo kinetic characterisation of this tyrosinase with 11 industrially relevant monophenols,

Competing-risks regression in Stata 11 [PDF]

open access: yes
Competing-risks survival regression provides a useful alternative to Cox regression in the presence of one or more competing risks. For example, say that you are studying the time from initial treatment for cancer to recurrence of cancer in relation to ...

THE IDENTIFIABILITY OF COPULA MODELS FOR DEPENDENT COMPETING RISKS DATA WITH EXPONENTIALLY DISTRIBUTED MARGINS

open access: yes, 2023
We prove the identifiability property of Archimedean copula models for dependent competing risks data when at least one of the failure times is exponentially distributed.

Chronobiology of Cancer: How Aging Fuels Oncogenesis at the Molecular Level

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
This graphical abstract illustrates the key biological pathways linking aging with cancer development and progression. In the upper left, cumulative exposure to ultraviolet radiation, toxins, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) causes DNA damage and genomic instability, whereas age‐related decline in repair mechanisms, such as ATM/ATR, BER, and NER ...
