Conformal Metallosaccharide Hybrid Films for Protecting Wood Surfaces From Environmental Damage

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ti‐ribose hybrid films fabricated by molecular layer deposition form a conformal and uniform coating on wood surfaces, which provides water repellence, dimensional stability, and resistance to acidic and alkaline environments, while preserving the natural appearance.

Functional Precision Oncology Approach Using Nanoliter Droplet Array for Drug Sensitivity Testing in Lung Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A miniaturized drug sensitivity and resistance testing (DSRT) workflow based on the Droplet Microarray (DMA) platform enables functional drug testing using minimal patient‐derived tumor material. By screening nanoliter‐scale droplets containing as few as 300 cells, this approach generates reproducible and tumor‐specific drug response profiles ...

Functional Blood‐Brain Barrier Crossing by Biomimetic M13 Phage Vectors for Targeted Neuronal Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates the M13 bacteriophage as a biomimetic nanovector capable of crossing in vitro models of the blood–brain barrier. By exploiting peculiar transcellular pathways, M13 avoids lysosomal degradation and preserves its structural integrity and functionality.

The use of insects, some land and marine invertebrates, in the biodegradation of plastic

open access: yesThe European Zoological Journal
Nowadays, environmental pollution caused by plastics, microplastics, and nanoplastics is an indisputable fact. The vast scale of plastic production, combined with the long period of spontaneous degradation (up to 1000 years) and the lack of effective ...

EB1 regulates attachment of Ska1 with microtubules by forming extended structures on the microtubule lattice

open access: yesNature Communications, 2016
Ska1 is a kinetochore-localised protein that couples kinetochore movement to microtubule (MT) depolymerisation. Here Thomas et al. show that the MT +TIP binding protein EB1 recruits Ska1 to the MT-kinetochore interface and stabilises the interaction ...

Sodium thiosulfate acts as a hydrogen sulfide mimetic to prevent intimal hyperplasia via inhibition of tubulin polymerisation

open access: yesEBioMedicine, 2022
Summary: Background: Intimal hyperplasia (IH) remains a major limitation in the long-term success of any type of revascularisation. IH is due to vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) dedifferentiation, proliferation and migration.

Kinetic Modelling of Hydrothermal Lignin Depolymerisation

open access: yes, 2014
Although lignin is one of the most abundant renewable organic materials in the world, it is principally a waste product of the paper industry which is used for the production of heat and power.

Actuation of Cell Layers in Three Dimensions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The alignment of fibers and cells in living tissues affect their mechanical properties and functionality. In this context, one can draw an analogy between tissues and nematic liquid crystal elastomers. We explore this analogy by growing fibroblasts on 2D‐patterned substrates and observing the contraction of cell sheets upon detachment from the

Self‐Seeded Nucleation of PET in a Benign Solvent Yields a High Modulus Aerogel With Ultra‐Low Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A new benign solvent (1,3‐diphenylacetone) enables a simple, safe, and sustainable dissolution and gelation method to convert waste PET into low density, monolithic aerogels with high mechanical strength (E = 20 MPa) and remarkably low thermal conductivity (k = 21.9 to 28.9 mW/m·K).

Serine protease(s) secreted by the nematode Trichuris muris degrade the mucus barrier. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2012
The polymeric mucin component of the intestinal mucus barrier changes during nematode infection to provide not only physical protection but also to directly affect pathogenic nematodes and aid expulsion.
